This show is so bananas, you'd think it was Taiwanese or Thai. In that sense, I liked it at first and it started…
You guys have to remember that certain networks and shows only allow a certain type of kissing. More often than not, kisses in kdramas are very unsatisfactory due to the way their censorship works. They have very strong censorship over something as small to us westerners as kisses, while free to show things that we would find outlandish. Japanese media is the perfect example as they censor the same sort of things while allowing a baffling level of violence and gore to a PG audience.
And this is not even mentioning that many actors have contracts against certain acts and will not cross those boundaries for their roles. An example of this in the west is Zendaya who has a strict no-n*dity clause in her contacts with TV shows so that they cannot ask this of her. In a culture that censors kissing and sees it as more explicit than we do, it's not a surprise that some actors in Korea create limitations against it in their contracts. Women have different images to uphold in Korea than we do, and many do not want to come off too lewd for a role.
You shouldn't blame/insult the actress's talent over something this trivial and rather just educate yourself on censorship laws and gender roles/media portrayal of gender roles in S. Korea. It shows you guys have no clue. Don't expect kdramas to have the same kissing as Westerner shows. I literally have a list of good kissing actors and networks that allow good kissing if I ever want that, but when I watch Kdramas, I expect censor-style kissing. We are consuming their art and their culture so we have to respect how they do things and what they choose to censor. I agree that it's underwhelming, but you don't get to just go around expecting rules and culture to change just because you want to see some actors kissing in a fictional show. No need for you guys to insult the actress just because you didn't get your way. If you want characters pawing at each other, go look on an X rated website for it. Respect it or just stop watching kdramas because it's not changing anytime soon.
I agree with this completely and 8 wish I'd found this review before I started the show. At the beginning of her…
I'm sorry but I died when you said "I could no longer go on" LMAOO exactly! I felt your pain. If I start skipping through a drama, I'm fed up. The last like maybe 4-5 episodes of the drama, I used my browser extension to play the drama at 2x speed. I was incredibly frustrated and just wanted it finish it. You're smart for stopping. I'm very picky with my time, so I get extremely frustrated when I feel I've wasted my time with something. Most of the time, I don't see anything as a TOTAL waste in life. But this show, I honestly regretted watching after I finished.
And P.S: Totally agree with you, she has so many red flags! That cat naming was just nuts, like honestly who does some ish like that??? I'd mop the floor with anyone who came into MY place acting entitled like that -- respectfully.
What an excellent review. I completely went off Ji-ho's character near the end, for the reasons you stated. I…
Thank you! I agree so much, it's so hard to find actual beneficial reviews because everyone rates so highly when they're happy. (And even if they're negative reviews, I don't want to take someone else's word for it blindly -- what if I like it after all?! Lol ) I personally try to stay away from reviewing at all if I really loved a drama, because it's going to be extremely biased. Of course it's all bias, but there should be a limit. I did a film major, my whole major was analyzing these sort of points and trying to be objective about each element of what I'm watching, so I really appreciate reviews that do the same.
To this day, people still quote this drama as one of the best and "relatable" and I don't get it. The show, IMO, barely covers the relatable parts people are referring to. There's many more dramas -- BETTER ones -- that relate to struggling young adults.
I felt I was being even generous with my rating, but I tried to be less biased because it was only the end and character I didn't like. Everything else was great. I will say, there's dramas I want to watch with that lead actress but I'm scared to watch her in anything else lol. I heard she's kind of the Kristin Stewart of Kdramas, always playing that same sort of character.
Except an age gap between someone who's 30 and 50 and someone who's a whole adult with a 17 year old in highschool…
Just because they waited until she was 18 doesn't make it okay?? It is still considered grooming, perhaps it's something you should take the time to research. No matter the circumstances or whatever "uncomfortable situation"; it's not an excuse and using that excuse in any context wouldn't fly. You're 100% making a pass for this sort of behavior, plain out and simple. All those words just to excuse it is honestly disgusting. I didn't remove any context, it 100% in context and outside of it is pedo-apologist. I'm not going on to read this entire rant. I'm not arguing with someone who's this digusting, you can't be reasoned with. Reported and blocked.
The age gap of the characters is no different then when you have a vampire show- people are just upset because…
Except an age gap between someone who's 30 and 50 and someone who's a whole adult with a 17 year old in highschool is way different. This is an awful, pedo-apologist take. Not even for this show but in general. Do not going around saying awful stuff like this.
Thank you I so agree with you: what a wasted opportunity to make a great drama. I had trouble suspending my belief…
Agreed, that scene was beyond stupid! The conflict created was nonsensical in this show. Literally one villain was hella cartoony while the other one was serious but really had no real leverage over the main character in the last half, so the his actions made no sense.
It's so frustrating when dramas seem so promising but fail to deliver! It's always a hit or miss because even reading reviews on here, people always give 10/10 reviews for stuff I end up hating haha.
Oh my good LORD YES!!! I hate time jumps and separations in everything their in - books, movies, shows, games,…
True, but it's not always military enlistment. Often times characters are running away, or trying to grow up, or going to America for some reason. To me, it's lazy writing if your character has to finish growing up within a time jump. They'll move for years and then come back within the very end of the story as you said. It'll be the last episode or the last 15 minutes of the entire story. Somehow they're taken to be more "mature" and ready to be around the other lead even though they act the exact same and maybe have a different haircut lol.
Does anyone hate the several years of separation usually near the end of the series?
Oh my good LORD YES!!! I hate time jumps and separations in everything their in - books, movies, shows, games, etc! To me, that's just complete lazy and awful writing. The writer could not get something resolved in a certain time frame, did not develop their characters enough, so uses the passage of time in order to develop their characters or solve a conflict. Just lazy, lazy, watt-pad level writing.
Oh man, I know this review was from years and years ago, but you describes everything, I mean EVERYTHING, i felt watching this drama. I thought I was reading my own diary or something when you brought up how you'll crave to find a love like theirs. For goodness sake, this show has ruined romance for me because I don't think I'll ever find someone who will love me in this way lol! I'll be comparing everything to this romance. Never have I encountered a drama, in my 10-12 years of watching drama, as perfectly executed as this. I think it really is my favorite now; I can't think of any others that compare. Normally one thing or another feels lacking, but to me, I felt nothing was lacking. OST, acting, cinematography, action, plotline, conflict, romance...usually one of these goes to crap. But this drama actually kept me engaged the entire time. I'm definitely someone who hates hates hates BS conflicts and love triangles, so this drama gave me everything I wanted. (AND REAL KISSES - REAL REAL kisses, can we talk about that?!) Well anyways, I'm not going to ramble on any more about it, I'll be here all night for sure if I do (Well morning, actually - I've already binge watched anywhere between 5-7 in the morning already the past couple of days, so I failed that point of yours.)
But well, thank you for putting into words everything I felt. I'm not sure how I'm going to proceed from here, everything in my life suddenly feels lackluster LOL. But definitely a recommend to any and everyone.
Yeah, sorry but get over it. You must be a child, these are professional working adults. They both have the maturity to take on their role and have professionalism. They don't have this child-like and immature way of thinking, they both clearly did a lot to get to where they were in their careers. They don't care about your personal opinion of age range, they're literally acting not dating--but even if they did date, they're both consenting adults who agreed to shoot the drama. I don't think some childlike opinion like this matter to them, especially considering how much they're getting paid. I'm sure even you'd kiss an old man's FOOT to get the pay they got for this film.
Great review! You summed up all the reasons why I didn't like this show and dropped it after 6 episodes. The female…
Ugh, it's a shame how true this was! I honestly didn't even realize how much I agreed with all of this until reading it from you. I'm just now realizing I spent most of the time during the last half of this drama finding Ji Ho ridiculous. I definitely had a problem with the episode where she renames his cat and acts overly familiar with him. And then had the nerve to be rude with the food and purposely not making him breakfast that next day. It's not like she was obligated to, but she was definitely being petty.People online said stuff like "If he won't act like husband material then she doesn't have to act like a wife and make him breakfast!!" Like b*tch no one expects 'wifey material' our of her! No one expects her to make breakfast! He didn't even want breakfast the first time until she started pouting and made him feel bad. I got such bad secondhand embarassment watching her purposely not make breakfast for him the nex day just to be petty. That WHOLE episode gave me secondhand embarrassment when watching it because she made a fool out of herself. I get that she couldn't help that she caught feelings for him, but throughout the whole drama, Se Hee made his boundaries VERY clear. If a GD written contract doesn't spell it out I don't know what would've. Her acting dignified like that and renaming his cat completely made me cringe; he has no obligation to entertain her feelings. It's not his fault if she caught feelings, their marriage was strictly for financial purposes and he literally told her. He told her from the beginning that he didn't want love. He was never rude about it. I don't understand why people think being rude and being emotionally reserved go hand-in-hand. He was never rude but didn't want their relationship to go farther than business partners on pleasant terms, and before that point where she got mad, he never made her beleieve differently. I could see her being upset had he lead her on, but he never did. Saying "let's go back to OUR home" is NOT leading someone on lol, it's literally the home where they both stay so it's their home. She got upset at him over a word yet somehow spins it to make him in the wrong for it. The whole thing was childish for me to see for a drama that was recommended to me as being 'mature', and all that was the first red flag I noticed from her. I get that she would be upset about hearing that from someone she has feelings for but it's not as if he was in the wrong for that. SHE was and she knew it. And for the comments I saw online that said "She had her pride/feelings hurt!" You're a grown f***ing adult in your 30s. Acting out because your pride is hurt is just not cute, it's childish and toxic.
I HATE that the drama paints it as if he's in the wrong, not only for that exchange but at the end as well. He had to be manipulated, lied to, and change his personality to make her happy. Now that i think about it, she basically acted out in petty ways until he realized he cared for her. I forgot I was watching a drama about people in their 30s and 40s rather than a highschool drama, because that's the level of maturity the main character had for dealing with things. Just stupid that they had him change the cats name and all of a sudden make him act out of character. Some people like him are just not that expressive but still try their best. I get you should speak up and remind people that you care about them but I hate how they practically forced him to change his personality to illustrate that point. He was trying his best to change all throughout the drama and showed his affection through actions rather than words. A nice mix would be best but I'd personally take someone who shows he cares about me more rather than the relationship like her friends, Ho Rang and Won Seok's, where they always said they loved each other but couldn't meet the other's needs or put any substance to those words. Jo Ho didn't give Se Hee a chance to even compromise even though he already was trying to, she just made the decision on her own and then left. Your significant other shouldn't have to change their personality for you, if you can't accept them as they are or be willing to compromise then don't be with them. Her doing what she did was probably the most toxic thing I've seen in watching asian dramas, and given how wild dramas are, that's saying something.
You're definitely right in that she acted like she was owed something. The ending with how she treated him just proved that. There's a fine line between sticking up for yourself/being bold and just being uncompromising. Her filing a lawsuit on her past coworker? That's sticking up for yourself. Most of her other childish actions in this drama towards Se Hee? Uncompromising. It really could've amounted to more. Thanks for the heads up with the actress, this drama has made me realize I really don't want more of that entitled *ss attitude. This drama acts all high and mighty and tries to be fake woke with its pretentious poetry, but really all those buttered up words aint amount to jack sh*t in the end. I've been disappointed by dramas before but I think this one left me the most empty.
Literally just spoiled Goblin for me...I've been excited to see it, and this comment implied something about the ending. Seriously, think before you post.
