There are millions of movies and dramas representing catholicism's cruelty, this one took a different approach…
We can imagine that the father is an exceptionally open-minded person. I personally know a priest who grew up in the sixties and was influenced by the cultural revolution of the seventies. He has always been very accepting of different people and is currently in his eighties. The last time we talked, he was reading The Queer Bible.

Tanrak lives in a bubble; he doesn't interact with religious people in general, only with the father and the other people at school. Also, yes, homosexuality was considered a huge sin back then, but at least in the religious institutions I've been to, people didn't talk about it much, since it was so taboo and they didn't want to encourage young people's curiosity.

With that said, I understand why you say it's too smooth: the homophobic bullies getting kicked out of school immediately, them always finding positive adult figures, and so on. That's an idealised situation, typical of that type of drama.

The entire ep 6 felt like an ad for the Catholic Church, Tanrak’s gayness was still seen as a sin in the end.…
oh I also grew up catholic and bi and have unresolved stuff with family and religion and with living in a conservative community so I get it twin 🤍 I guess the show allowed me to understand a bit better people that still find some healing and positive in faith despite being traumatised by organised religion; which is definitely not my experience, I've been very anti-religious for most of my life. but this was an interesting exercise in trying to accept a different perspective. I did feel very uncomfortable when barth prayed though. I really dislike to see crucifixes in public spaces and I thought me and him were kind of on the same page up to that point. I guess we all project a bit with this kind of media :)

Thanks god the catholic church is homophobic, transphobic and generally sex-phobic so it can't weaponise this kind of 'positive publicity'. Anyways I get your point, but also Barth was never an atheist, he just connected god to his abusive father and it didn't feel too out of character for him to find his faith again. Can you imagine dating a catholic guy like Tanrak without believing in god yourself? It would be almost impossible. Also there's nothing wrong in believing in something because you're traumatised, it doesn't make it less valid. We all have our ways to deal with stuff. Personally I found it funny to see a hyper catholic gay married couple cuddle and flirt right in front of their mary themed house altar.

...yeah, it just feels unserious to me since i've lived through this experience. I knew it would be another "family-friendly"…
There are millions of movies and dramas representing catholicism's cruelty, this one took a different approach to it. It showed that even with well meaning, kind people around, you can still deal with a lot of guilt and religious trauma. It's okay to not feel represented by it, but it doesn't mean it's unserious or less real. My experience with catholicism was a pretty accurate mix of Tanrak's and Barth's.

I mean there was a bit of ambiguity to keep people slightly curious, but we knew it was going to be either Tanrak or Kongdech, and that GMTTV and P'Aof especially like happy endings, so I feel like they didn't care that much about shocking the viewers with some unexpected twist. It's okay to like it and it's okay to dislike it, there are many series for us to find our favourites :)

I really liked the dialogues overall but I feel like in the last episode they got a bit repetitive. And yes the ending was kind of predictable, but I guess it wasn't made to be unpredictable? Like overall Ticket to Heaven didn't feel like a series that was made to surprise the viewers, but more to allow them to see things from the character's point of view, to understand their fears and their anxieties as well as their need to be loved and accepted, and to grow and heal alongside them.

I dropped it at episode 22 because the male lead was becoming annoying, like, possessive and forward and so on. I know some people like that, don't come for me. Anyways, does he stay like that? Is it worth it to try and finish it if I'm not into that type of romance?

Agreed. And I didn't grow up Catholic, I grew up Southern Baptist. I believe from my experience that the father's…
I grew up Catholic and it is indeed both uncommon and based on the Bible's teachings. It was the most compassionate answer a Catholic priest could offer in that situation; still not enough, because Catholicism is very much built around guilt – but that's a structural flaw that goes beyond the priest's intention, that is well meaning and empathy based.

sadly that's often true in real life, but father arnon doesn't look like he's doing it for personal interest. I've met a few priests that actually care about people, although they're not the majority.

and I agree with you, I'm an atheist and I was raised catholic, I was just saying that the problem is religion as a system and not religious people as individuals, because they do believe they're doing the right thing

It was difficult to watch when baby Tanrak was crying for his parents, he got religious dogma as answer not truth.
I think he got a truth. father arnon really believes in that, so it's not exactly manipulative. he was comforting tanrak as a catholic would do. it's fucked up from the outside but people do really think that if you behave well you'll meet your loved ones again in heaven.

I was afraid to watch episode five because I was expecting high drama. Instead, it was devastating in a much quieter way than I had anticipated. It made me feel numb and nauseous. As a closeted Catholic kid in an unsafe home, I used to write down my thoughts and then burn them in the fireplace for fear that my family might read them. I would wake up in a panic at night and compulsively check every page of my notebook to make sure I had got rid of everything. You kind of learn to wear the shame like a second skin. Even after all these years, it still lives in my body somewhere. You just get used to it; you don't realise how bad it is. It was only when I read people's comments on the episode that I realised how unfair it was to grow up in constant fear. That's also why representation matters.

I think he said it in a very catholic 'I am worried about your soul' way. it's still bad but it makes sense in that environment.

I think the point is to show it doesn't really matter in the eyes of father arnon (and god) if he's in love with a boy or with a girl. when you decide to become a priest, you're supposed to be selfless and to love everyone the same amount because you're representing god on earth. tanrak's sin is that his love is selfish, he likes barth more than other people, feels jealousy, spends his time thinking about him instead of praying, talking with him and writing notes instead of studying, he breaks rules with him, and so on. that's why father arnon asks him if if his feelings are getting him closer to god or the opposite.

Title 4Minutes
Why is it wrong to use an 18-year-old in the series?
I had already closed the discussion in my previous comment, so let me be clearer: I'm not going to engage with disingenuous arguments like that one, also considering first, I've never said I'm okay with minors being murdered in media, you just assumed it and rolled with it; and two, I've already talked about the way the public generally consumes sex scenes. The fact that you've resorted to whining at me to 'shut up' is telling in itself. Do you enjoy challenging others but not being challenged? You shouldn't have started this conversation, then. Byee

Of course I am saying it, who else, you asked for my opinion lol. I have every right to drop something if it feels immoral and uncomfortable. And yes, it is different, first because of the way it's shot, no intimacy coordinators whatsoever, and second because of the effect it's meant to have on the public. Legal and moral are not the same thing, go push your pedophilic logic somewhere else.
