Can I just say I appreciate your referencing? =) It's a breath of fresh air to get access to source material…
Sorry for the delayed response, but yes, I am. I've done research writing and I want to make sure the proper sources are credited. I'd hate to think I made up numbers... I don't have time for that, especially when someone's already done the real number/information crunching! :D
Ya I agree, guess sistermance is not that common. Plus if the female has a friend I get worried if she'll…
In a bunch of the lakorns I've watched, the BFF is interchanged with a girl or an effeminate male. Either way, they seem to balance out the lead female well. :)
I think maybe we dont see sistermance for a lot of reasons... A lot of female protagonists are outcasts, or somewhat…
I think I should've clarified my feeling for a male hanging out with a female (lead) as a platonic friend rather than a love interest. There has to be a likability factor for a guy to hang out with a girl but the feelings shouldn't always be romantically-inclined. Not only does it cheapen the male character, but makes the female protagonist be nothing else but an object to be desired or attained.
With that being said, I do believe most writer-nyms believe a female BFF to the female lead doesn't move plot along. However, She Was Pretty proves this wrong. Sadly, I'd have to tap into my Chinese/Taiwanese/Japanese/lakorn drama list to prove the female BFF role helps move a story along.
Like you, I don't want a character (male or female) to be added in a story just to fill a "hole". They should have purpose and personality. :D
I also think that K-Drama's lack that. We need more 'sistmance', sisterhood, good friendship between…
I struggled in a way to calling it "wo-mance" or "sis-mance". Is that crazy or what? Anyway, as I wrote this article, I wondered if I was the only one who notices the lack of the female BFF. She Was Pretty is definitely the closest I've seen in a 16-ep drama that had a friend who, despite of it all, stayed loyal to the friend than the guy. I'm glad they didn't have to part ways.
