I understand u but every drama has its own target. The target of this is the unrealistic selfless innocent ML as u said but it's fantasy drama not real drama at all so that's normal. And the FL don't has a heart and can't feel anything she is a devil and suffered alot so of course she mentally weak everything she does which she just learned from the surroundings of her.
For me I can see her growth and her love for the ML for sure less than ML but still exist.
So the main target is how can his selfless love throughout their lives make her have a heart and knowing the meaning of love.
He also show his responsibility to his friends, tribe and master and the whole world.
He didn't force her for anything so this isn't harmful obsession.
For the self-love I'm with u too he lacked it but the self-love differs from one to one and he is a confident, reasonable and proud but she's his weak point as everyone has a weak point.
I wanna say no one can love ppl without loving himself/herself.
Oc the self-love a must thing but this couple made for each other to complete each other because everyone lack a thing.
I couldn't give u an appropriate answer because I lack English and also expressing my feelings.
But THIS IS FANTASY drama and everyone has his own character and growth.
IF EVERYONE WANTS THE BEST OF EVERYTHING IN THEIR PARTNERS SO THERE WILL BE SOME PPL CAN'T FIND SOMEONE TO LOVE THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE LACKING ALOT.
And u can search for another xianxia but read the comments and reviews to know the nature of the drama and the characters to enjoy alot

They are distinctive due to the story and the personality of the MC so they are adorable for me.
TMOPB more angst, sadness and heartbreak and passionate ML.
ELOD more happy but oc there're some heartbreak too and also more scenes between the MC than TMOPB and more powerful ML For the CGI one of the most amazing in all xianxia drama land.
So of course MUST watch.
Dilraba is a childish, innocent and cute but there is some growth in her character throughout the series so the opposite of TLB but I loved her too
