And also the fact that her mom is so strict with her she developed a coming mechanism to lie, I think you are right that telling the truth could spread some rumors and the mother would get even more mad because she cares about her image more than about the daughter

I guess it could be rooted in her inability to admit that she is weak and got taken advantage of(?) and so she puts on this strong persona that she did all of it herself and it was all her choice, when in fact it wasn't. It was just her trying to regain control over the whole situation
