That is because the translation is wrong, I am a chinese and I can give a better translation. Fan Yue is "yao wang", "yao" is not demon but is "youkai" (in Japanese). Yao are strange, supernatural creatures and phenomena from Chinese/Japanese folklore. "wang" simply means king. So Fan Yue is not really a demon.

According to wiki...In the Anime it's well explain that he is indeed Yan Bing's elder brother, that got stabbed by the machination of Lu Tianyou and revived as a spirit. In the anime He tried his best to uphold the promise he made to his father of taking care of Rakshasa Street and protecting his little brother, something that he does awakening his guardian at a very young age and by ultimately protecting his brother at the cost of his own life.

Not really but watching it will make the story more complete and better understanding. I prefer the anime version.
