1) The romance was very steamy in the first half and you felt it was leading somewhere, but it virtually disappeared…
I think this time flip is intentional, its a conscious choice by the script writer to emphasize the chaotic atmosphere caused by the inability to control fate and inner struggles of the characters.

On Song of the Moon Dec 10, 2025
This was such a nice and masterfully written show that conveyed multiple themes concerning the human condition. Zhang Bin Bin’s acting was very, very exquisite and nuanced. I'm in awe of his ability to portray each persona differently without merging or mixing them with each other. His characters were the spotlight of the show and the most consistently and profoundly written (yes, the rest didn't have this psychological depth as him); each persona realistically could be relatable!
Lu Li symbolizes our loss of innocence; he depicts our core that thrives for simplicity and normal life, yet the turbulence of reality sways it eventually :( the writer tries to depict him as Lou Ge's illusion and hidden unfulfilled desires.
Lou Ge portrays humans’ everlasting struggle with finding purpose. This is his existential crisis alongside his quest for self-discovery that metaphorically seems like an unending tide; each peak is a moment of anagnorisis. From self-alienation to self-acceptance and development, Lou Ge is a lesson for all of us. He literally embodies and symbolizes the moon in all its phases.
The evil spirit emphasizes the conflict between inner desires and the consequences of how we deal with them.
I appreciate how his complex is built up and how the writer unveils all these layers painfully (╥﹏╥).
Lou Ge finally finds the purpose of his existence, and this realization is very shocking.
Overall, the show smoothly develops until ep 24, where the focus drifts to the demon world (which was really unnecessary and very superficial); the plot picks up again in ep 35.
If you want to watch this show, please watch it while paying keen attention to details and symbolisms because this isn’t a mere love story; in fact, love is just a catalyst. And yeah, don’t forget to grab tissue papers cz you’ll cry a lot!

looking back after finishing the show, Mao Xiao Tong and Zhang bin bin were the perfect candidates for these characters I cannot imagine anyone else acting Sibie and Qin nan other than them.
The dimensions of this drama are exquisite tapping on existential and social crisis, in addition to family dynamics

what is Jiaxing? is it an agency or what? on the contrary I really sensed that over the past two years he's been choosing very versatile roles starting with live surgery room, the blossoming love and now light beyond the reed and I predict that his upcoming drama in 2026 will also be a good one

I read the novel like 3 months ago and when I’m watching now how these words are transitioning into a visualised narrative the effect was more profound on me as the depiction has bestowed another dimension to the story, it’s really impressive. I advice u to read it and I hope that you’ll have a rich experience reading and watching it😊

So far enjoying every minute of this show, and the actors are really doing great job in immersing me.. Zhang bin bin has developed radically (I always liked his acting but here it’s more humane) as well for Mao Xiao she is living her character, what a nuanced portrayal! This show def gonna be my top 2025 show
