I love a side quest, but this isn’t an open-world RPG—it’s a drama! Now we’re stuck with 27 subplots, 10 schemes and plots, 5 mystery villains, and zero idea who did what or why. Lol. Let’s concentrate on the crimes, the motives, and the story behind it…

I stopped reading the novel because it started to confuse me with the drama—and that really shouldn’t be the case. The book is long, detailed, and heavily women-centered, more like a mystery crime novel. That works great in written form, but when adapting it for the screen, some side characters or subplots need to be trimmed. What works on paper doesn’t always translate well on screen.

That’s where I think the director slipped up. Staying too faithful to the novel ended up diluting the main plot. Now half the time we can’t even remember who’s doing what—or why. He assumed viewers had read the book, and that’s just not a smart move it only confuses the audience. And honestly, the editing issues? That’s on him. This is a crime drama, and details matter. He should’ve been way more attentive to the small things.

BUT… the acting? Absolutely on point—from the leads to the supporting cast. The color grading, the atmosphere, the whole vibe? Gorgeous. Even the historical coroner details were surprisingly accurate (yes, I did some digging!). I genuinely love this drama, and that’s exactly why I’m pointing out the little things—it has so much potential, and with a few tweaks, it could’ve been even more amazing.

Totally get where you're coming from—and you're right that the heart of the story isn’t meant to be palace drama, and FL does have bigger goals. She is the emperor and dowager’s savior, and that alone is a huge card to play. No need for crowns or titles.
