Things that would've made this scene even better: Framed photos on the wall.

1) Shifu handing her a diploma
2) wedding photo with Heshi, General Pei as groomsman and the A'du, Luoxi, Mi luo, etc as bridesmaids
3) photos with their parents at like Disneyland. lol.
4) They have a dog that looks like a wolf

Ohh, so you're saying that he should've told Xiao Feng that LCY was the Xiaowu?

Here's where it gets confusing. There are other people (myself included) who don't believe that General Pei knew about the marriage. He didn't know that they fell in love for real. All he knew was that the prince was going undercover to find the Danchi tribe.

So there's many many layers going on.

First of all, thanks for these recaps! Can you remind me what the first wish LCY granted XF?
There's a comment below that talks about the three wishes and that person pointed out how one of her wishes was for LCY to kill Gu Jian!! My heart!

Do you remember now? It's right after the Danchi attack and they're in the tent. She got all of her wishes. So poignant.

Wait, are you saying that you feel Pei Zhao should've lied and said he was Xiaowu during the arrow scene to save Gu Jian? If so, that's a very interesting scenario that would've been cool to see. I imagine they would've then gotten into a sword fight and that opens it up to a bunch of possible new endings.

But, if you're saying that Pei Zhao should've told Li Chen that Gu Jian wasn't Xiaowu then I'd like to share my thoughts. I do not believe that Pei Zhao knew that Li Chen thought that Gu Jian was Xiaowu. If you recall that scene where Xiao Feng telling him she loved Xiaowu the most, she only told him that. No one else was around. No one else knew that he was wrongly mistaking Gu Jian for Gu Xiaowu.

She technically wasn't lying. In hers eyes XiaoWu is dead. And he was killed by Li Chen's actions and choices. There's a lot of depth in her words, but of course he doesn't make sense to Li Chen.

I saw the single tear the first time I watched it. They were friends afterall. Annnnd now I'm wondering about the story of their bromance. General Pei has been with LCY for many years. Just how did he meet GXW, especially since GXW lived in Xi state.

Forgive me if the answers known or is obvious. I did not watch the beginning carefully. Or did they only just meet after the Danchi attach?

Absolutely! The show starts with them planning to elope. I believe that he's loved her for years. Perhaps for…
I don't absolve him for his role in connecting Li Chen Yi, but I will always attempt to defend Gu Jian. This show had a lot of plotlines woven into it. It didn't help that I spaced out a bit in the beginning. I didn't have high expectations for this one tbh. I had no idea going into it, what it would be about. I asked on another forum for titles that would make me cry lol, and then just went directly into episode one. I rooted for Li Chen Yi for a good amount of time, but I am definitely Team Shifu.

Li Chen Yi would've gone after Danchi on his own. Yes, Gu Jian gave him a clear path, but LCY would've found a way to avenge his brother. As I think about it, I'm still a little confused about certain event timelines and connections.

XF loved Shifu so much that it didn't take much for her to believe his words that the Tea Trader was the best man for her. But if we break it down, he technically told few lies. His crime is more of the omission type. Li Chen Yi is his cousin. So that wasn't a lie either. He just help them to meet. Everything else was LCY. He was the one selling that false identity.

Unfortunately, I knew (in my heart) early on that Shifu wasn't going to make it. It was clear that he had to bear that tragic death for the story. I figured he'd die by someone else's hand. The subplot with the poison adds to the already immense sadness that surrounds him. In a way it lessens the blow (for me), to know that he would've died naturally anyway in 6 months. It would've hurt more for him to be completely healthy and die by the arrows. Because then it becomes...Xiao Feng and him could've lived decades more together. But with this version of events, only six months more were possible.

I need a new drama to watch. Any suggestions?

LCY was going to kill GJ anyway for taking XF hostage. My interest dropped right around then with that hostage plot. I did not understand why LCY was panicking right away. Their initial plan is still a bit unclear to me, so if you wanna shed some light on it, I'd appreciate it. Was the plan to kill the emperor and then take LCY hostage? Anyway, mistakes were made; but at that time they were all on the same side still. It's understandable that he would have to act worried, but behind the scenes it made no sense for him to go off on Sir Chai. In theory, they'd hide for like a week and then XF would walk back to the palace herself. We could even still keep the same plotline of GJ keeping her against her will. When week 2-3 hits, and she still isn't back, then I can agree with LCY getting angry.

I don't think that XF was purposely misleading LCY to think that GJ was GXW. When she looked at him and said it, she was referring to him. He of course doesn't understand the layers of it. She was professing her love to that version of him. And that version of him is indeed now dead. The current LCY killed GXW with the choices he made and the actions he took. She's so hurt and upset and likely wasn't thinking of how that statement would lead to physical danger for GJ.

But now you've got me thinking more. He killed his cousin. He knows that's his cousin. *shake my head*.

I don't think anyone else knew that LCY thought that GJ was GXW. If General Pei knew, he would've said something during the arrow scene. And I don't think he ever mentions that he's looking for GXW to Sir Chai. A'du wasn't around either. So it's plausible that no one (besides XF) knew about the mistaken identity.

Could GXW be a metaphor or blend of both of LCY and GXW? Hmm. This series is proving to be much deeper than I initially anticipated. I wasn't really excited about it, and only started it because I asked for recommendations on a different forum after finishing other shows.

GXW was a persona crafted by both GJ and LCY (and Sir Chai, etc). He was thought up and then LCY assumed the role.

Before the River of Oblivion, Xiao Feng would've never loved LCY on his own. She had Shifu in her heart.

After the River of Oblivion, she grew to love LCY and couldn't recall who GJ was; but after he "became" GXW....she was able to accept GJ.

There's like a flip flop happening, with GXW being the connector/center dot. I need a few days to analyze it. There's a metaphor here, that I'm close to grasping. I'm gonna draw a chart. lol.

A lot of shows have the theme song sung by the main characters. I really like that aspect of Chinese dramas. I remember watching my first drama and thinking how unique and amazing they were to do that. Then I noticed a pattern lol.

The male lead is younger than me lol..
His character is around 18 when the story starts. There's a scene when the grandmother talks about how Li Chen Yi was already 20 and should've had kids by now.

I was #TeamShifu early on. Let me start by saying that I haven't read the novel, and this is the first series that I've watched with that set of lead actors. Shawn Wei was perfectly cast as Xiao Feng's teacher. He portrayed Shifu beautifully. He had such a calming presense. He was mature and wise, while still having a bit of silliness and humor.

I liked Li Chen Yi, and at times rooted for him; but he was not their first. In the timeline of their lives, it was Shifu that she met first and loved first. Watching him tell XF how she once loved him was wretching.

While people feel bad about LCY and how he was pushed into court politics, he at least had a happy childhood. I'm sure GJ had happy moments, but as a kid he was being conditioned and trained for the mission. He wanted to walk away (remember the scene with Sir Chai reminding him not to throw things away for a girl?). GJ reocgnized that he could live happily with Xiao Feng, and he attempted it. They almost eloped. Yes, he was late and lost his chance, but he at least the plan was made. That's farther than many people go in terms of love.

I knew he wasn't going to make it in this series, but I am surprised that's how it happened. I wish that he could've heard her say that she loved him too or that she forgave him for the string of events that lead to the Danchi massacre. It would've been nice imo for her to acknowledge him and the good times they shared. I feel that he deserved more.
