The girl he remembers during his school days isn't Ting Yu but another girl that he fell in love with but his family didn't want them to be together so, when she left to go to Afrika, he decided to stay by Ting Xuan's side. That's why he sends a letter from Afrika to Ting Yu at the end : he went to find the girl he really loves :)
