as far as i understood, at first the dad was just interested in his son because he thought his friends might have done the killings and used that place for hiding the bodies. when he went to his son's place and saw the evidence then he started blaming himself for how his son turned into a murderer BUT at the end its pretty clear that his son was the psychopath's first kill and then that psycho used the policeman's son's identity. so it doesn't matter what the policeman's relationship with his son was because he wasn't the one who killed anyone
