It seems almost every drama actor who have some amount of popularity would do this republican era drama or some propaganda show in a way to reach a wider audience. Having a large network screen the show gets in new viewers and it can potentially give him the chance to break out of idol circle. As you said, its quite clear that he is on a mission. But it seems more obvious in movie choices that he is making - an upcoming art house cinema. Doing an action movie or a contemporary romance might work better in his favor though but that's not the choice that's made at the moment.
It is possible that he is wanting to stand a little different than his peers by choosing plot heavy script (be it Luoyang or Being a Hero) that don't have a lot of room for drama. That's just my observation :)
This show drops a lot of historical facts that they are expecting the audience to know. As an outsider, my knowledge of Opium wars is very minimal and I had no idea about seven nation alliance. This won't deter from watching the show itself but I think for folks who are well aware of these parts of Chinese history, its more enjoyable. Also the romance seems to be an after thought that might not even exist, and seeing a badass female lead has pretty great.
It will be interesting to watch how the moral conflicts will be presented and handled.
This is one of those shows where its actually getting interesting with passing episode, adding new characters but not in an overwhelmingly way and also - character growth. Its been quite a fun show to watch!
After watching 10 episodes, I hope the show keeps up with plot, pace and character growth. If it does, am sure it will end up being quite rewatchable in future as well.
