Every single west drama calls it "Africa" why are these people bitching about when this happens in kdrama? This…
The reason western dramas corrected their terminology over the past decade is because viewers pointed out that it was ignorant to refer to a continent as a singular country. If viewers hadn't pointed it out, it wouldn't have been corrected. And western dramas continue to be heavily critiqued for ignorance on social media like Twitter, so that writers can learn and be better the second time around. K-dramas don't get a pass for ignorance, and giving them one doesn't suddenly make all the ignorance in western dramas disappear. Constructive criticism is not getting "triggered", it's a way to improve dramas so that everyone can enjoy them equally. Regardless of which country the drama comes from.

apart from the "africa"/savior complex controversy, i'm quite surprised that no one has pointed out how there's…
LITERALLY i was cringing for that entire scene, if this were a different drama and the stereotypical bad boss did the same behavior to a female subordinate in the workplace he would get reprimanded for it. i thought kdrama writers had moved past this type of toxic behavior from male characters

They needed to portray a charity program and they picked one out of many possibilities. They didn't say that Africa…
The writer should've just listed the specific country where Tae Sung was volunteering instead of just saying "Africa." Like it's just weird to lump South Sudan and Egypt and Algeria together in terms of how "developed" they are because they differ in a lot of areas. Africa is almost always generalized in media as one big charity case and it's not true. Each country is different. It's like lumping the entire Korean peninsula together instead of recognizing the differences between North and South Korea.

Kim Young Dae’s acting is terrible. And he doesn’t have that ML aura. No offense to his fans
I really hope he'll surprise us in the upcoming episodes, in all the dramas I've seen him in he doesn't really move his face or express emotion so I got literal WHIPLASH seeing him show emotions in the teaser for ep 2.

I started watching it bc I saw some fmvs on youtube and it looked interesting. It's ok so far, but I definitely see the reasons for controversy, and it kind of sucks how JTBC could've made a drama that elevates the democratization movement where a girl's dorm protects a student protestor, and instead we've got a storyline that uses the democratization movement as a background and pretty much says "yeah we know the government used to hunt down and torture student protestors under the guise of them being spies from North Korea, but what if it was TRUE this time??". It's a weird vibe and an uncomfortable premise and people are definitely justified in complaining about it. And I'm only on episode 3, but we've already got 2 separate instances where the act of protesting is minimized by the main character, Young-ro, and she says that Soo-ho (still thinking that he's a student protestor) should spend his time doing more useful things. Bad message to send to viewers about the value of protesting. Again, I'm only on episode 3, so we'll see if anything changes. I hope so, bc the production value is really great and the cast has some of my favorite actors. I really hope Jisoo's acting improves as the episodes continue. I feel like Kim Hye Yoon would've made a better Young-ro since she's a more experienced actress and it's a heavy role to carry, especially for your drama debut. I have nothing against idol actors (Junho, IU, Bae Suzy do really well in their projects), I just wish they'd start with smaller roles and build their experience and skills before they take on bigger roles, because a bad actor can ruin an entire drama. Jung Hae In continues to be incredible and I'm glad he's got a lead role in a big network drama. Yoon Se Ah is the GOAT and deserves a lead role in a big drama sometime soon.

I'm also not really a fan of the mockery of Kye Boon Ok either - the writing makes fun of her for being poor and aspiring to be something she's not (rich, college student, etc.). Like having her dress up for the group date and snatch the paper airplane from Young-ro, having her abandoned by Soo-ho bc we assume she's too weird or not good enough, and the whole thing where she steals items from the students and dresses up at night pretending that she's a rich girl ... all portrayed as "humorous." And it seems like they're setting her up to be a villain, with her immediate compliance with the government officers to find the guy who is actually a North Korean spy. A little weird coming from the writer of Sky Castle. I hope this changes, I saw some scenes in fmv's from future episodes that make it seem like it does, but idk. We'll see. If it gets better I'll keep watching, if there's more content that makes me uncomfortable about what they say about history and whatnot, I'll just drop it.
