I don’t know how to feel about this one.

On one hand, Contrast tells pretty typical story about two boys navigating their first romantic relationship. It’s a sweet introvert/extrovert romance with decent acting, lovely cinematography, and dialogue that genuinely feels like awkward teenagers learning how to flirt. Their interactions are charming without being cringeworthy, which is surprisingly rare, and the actors do have nice chemistry.

On the other hand…
…there’s that damn pedo subplot.

I really wish I had looked up spoilers beforehand because I’m honestly exhausted by these kinds of age gap storylines in japanese bls. And no, I don’t have a problem with heavy or uncomfortable topics. What bothers me is how often these series treat literal grooming as if it’s just an interesting character trait or a bit of tragic backstory.

The frustrating part is that Contrast actually hints at the psychological damage it caused (Akira talks a lot about feeling broken and “impure”). But despite acknowledging the trauma, the series brushes past it with surprising ease instead of giving it the weight it deserves.

This storyline needed much more time and care. Rather than confronting the abuse and its long term consequences, the show treats it as just another obstacle on the way to the romance.
