if you watch ep 1 closely, environment does have an impact on a character's development. Go Eun Teak's parents might force to focus on study really well to attend big universities such as Seoul Uni. This might be the reason he was so cold to the girl that liked him, and a perfectionists where every seconds mattered. For broadcasting team, his club was on the competition with the student council (sort of) for the attention of the school. Therefore, he had to make sure that everything went smoothly. Because the school was going to have an anniversary, Eun Teak had to find a broadcaster for the event, and Beak Ho Rang was a competent choice (she could read the script fluently and on time in the interview). Also, people in the broadcasting team recommended Ho Rang because of her popularity. Thus, Eun Teak had a tremendous respect for her. For Ho Rang's personality, I believed it rooted from the lack of care from her parents. In ep1, her mom called to tell her that she was going to be late, and Ho Rang could order rice for dinner. When she did not have the attention from her parents, the toxicity was self-explainatory.
