I'm not sure if that's it. Bu Bu Jing Xin (Scarlet Heart) also caused a sensation and that show made me cry my eyes out. I think it's because lots of audience like a faster plot unlike Ruyi which is more slow and mature. Also, hate to say this, but the sets in Ruyi need some work. Yanxi sets were really really really amazing.

Empresses in the Palace, Story of Yanxi Palace. That's the main ones I can think of. Legend of Mi Yue had some of harem fighting too but it's hard to get subs for that show and it's also set in the Late Warring States which is like 2000 years before

TBH dramas are all pretty fake so half the characters in this drama didn't exist. I don't know about Empress Xiaoyichun (aka. Consort Ling). However being the consort that kind of just crept up when another empress fell without really a recommendation (Ruyi in history was reccommended by the Empress Dowager) makes me think that Consort Ling was probably scheming. In fact, both dramas portray her as really scheming just that in Ruyi Yanwanwas scheming for evil but in Yanxi Yingluo was scheming to get revenge on those who wronged her or her loved ones. From what history derives Step-Empress Hoifa Nara cut her hair SEEMINGLY because she wasn't as good of an empress as Empress Xiaoxianchun (aka. Empress Fucha) which leads me to think that she wasn't a bad person but rather just stressed out. Also all the fighting in harem dramas is an exaggeration of what probably happened irl because who would want to just scheme and fight all day?!

I think the reason why everyone hates this drama is because the ending was choppy and bad (TOTALLY AGREE THERE) but the plot throughout was really pretty good and the actors' chemistry was SOLID. PS the costumes and sets make me faint sometimes I just fall into a daze looking at the drama :)))
Somebody please tell me if the male lead is lu bu Wei or that yiren. If lu bu Wei is second lead I will be depressed…
I HONESTLY don't know and I finished the drama. In my opinion he's the main lead because Hao Lan never really seemed to love Zichu. She had a budding affection for him but when he left Hao Lan alone in Zhao for eight years she really didn't love him. She didn't seem to like Lü Buwei but when he crashed into her bedroom and hugged her she didn't push him away so IDK.
