I wouldn't say it is dark, compared to other dramas it isn't as scary. Also a lot of people say that its slow paced storyline but they move it along well so you are interested in what will happen next. I'm not one to normally watch law/thriller dramas but this drama does it really well. The best I can describe it is like Again My Life but with a more intricate revenge plot :)

I think your theory on the sister makes the most sense. I honestly just thought she had a mental illness and her sister was never actually a real person. Maybe ae jin doesn't know that girl wasn't her real sister. She probably was traumatized so she forgot some of her childhood memories and she connected the dots with what little she remembered.
