i think akira experience something called love at the first sight with hijiri. his "falling" is sign that he fall in love and it kinda going deeper each time they had conversation. and from hijiri's side, i think it was because akira is the only person that really get her attention with that poem, asking question, make a statement etc. and more importantly, akira is the only one support her in her low condition when what shotaro did is only want hijiri to give up and coming with him. and don't forget with unexpected akira did, it really gonna makes woman skip a beat.
