I'd give this series 0 stars if I could. Terrible Stockholm Syndrome "romance" but I guess it's ok bc he's hot? If you like that kind of thing you'll likely love this, but if you like your MLs to have any positive qualities whatsoever I don't recommend this.
Ling Ziyan is in my top 10 least favorite drama characters ever.
Really, you ask someone to go die on his wedding day bc you can't lose YOUR man, but it's fine if you take away someone else's? She also had ZERO chemistry with Xifan and I have trouble believing that a man of Xian's character would continue to be with someone who did something so despicable AND spied on them for the emperor on top of that... the show just had him stay with her to pair the spares.
Speaking of someone who hates to dislike female characters, just why. She's the one character who gets everything she wants at the end, status, a good man, recognition and she did NOTHING to deserve it. The self-interested get everything is the moral of her story, apparently.
Just finished ep 41 and genuinely upset... Did Banruo still love Yuwen Hu at all? Once she got married it felt like she forgot she ever loved him. I was looking forward to watching two people who loved and matched each other in conflict, but in the end it felt like she only cared about milquetoast Yuwen Yu. The only time she showed any sign of still caring about him was not being able to personally kill him. I know she's a main character so they wanted to make her into a ~virtuous wife~ who only went to YH out of desperation and regretted it intensely for the rest of her life, but that's so boring. I wanted to see her conflicted not out of guilt, but love! Even her last conversation with him, she told her sisters she had to "fight this last battle" with him for their sakes, and i felt like she was just manipulating him for the entire conversation... I don't know. The actors have such incredible chemistry and I feel like they wasted so much of it by having her not yearn for him at all when he clearly was for her, all the time.
Like, he's a bad, horrible, terrible man but he loved her so much. He cried about her so much, and she said was that she worst thing she ever did was meet/be with him. I heard about the great second romance and this sort of two terrible people who love each other but are at odds is my kind of thing, but I feel misled. It started out so promising and then just completely deflated once she became empress. Yes, he's the villain of the story, yes, her putting her ambitions ahead of him was the correct character choice. I just wish they'd showed her feeling conflicted about it more, or at all. She made him think he killed their child and didn't seem to care at all how much she made him suffer, while was going against her but still trying so hard to keep anything from happening to her, much less torturing her emotionally. I never write comments but I'm clearly upset enough too, lol. Why bother calling it a love triangle if she just casts off all her feelings for the other guy two minutes after she gets married.
