Her character is like that. She isn't an expressive person and so far no situation has arisen yet that would evoke an emotional reaction out of her. I'm sure that won't be the case for all episodes.

I don't think past lovers, it seems like she encountered him on a case before and couldn't catch him, and probably carries guilt or regret regarding that, based on the last scene in the episode

So well written, this deserves an award. The characters aren't morally perfect, they make several mistakes and questionable choices like all of us do. What makes them inspiring is their ability to get knocked down again and again, bear the consequences for their choices, and still continue to fight for what is right.
