It's been a while since I've seen the film but from what I remember I don't think Aki's parents knew she lived with the grandmother. I believe the grandmother was tricking them into thinking that she was the ex-wife of Aki's now dead grandfather in order to receive money from her family. As for Shota (the boy), Osamu (the father figure of this makeshift family) claims to have saved him, not kidnapped him. According to Osamu, Shota had been abandoned by hus parents in a car.
