I agree that it’s a great series. Although the main couple is only 20&23 years old, the storyline is for a more mature audience. The younger crowd may not enjoy it as much, not to mention the Republic Era seems disconnected to the mass audience and most likely, younger group.

ML is navigating his current situation with great care, and I am rather impressed with his decisions thus far. He’s maturing although just turned 20. He’s trying to do right to all parties, yet not being stepped on by anyone. If he continues to grow in this manner, I feel that he deserves the FL because he’s fighting for her. I also feel that she would be a great life partner for him, in term of steering him the right way instead of being led astray given his family business and the shady influences surrounding him. I’m rooting 100% for this couple.

I’m getting a different feel. FL is ML’s father dead buddy’s daughter. The twist is FL’s birth family was killed by Mr. Rong.

Everything you said is correct. Ms. Sun was a mistress who prepared opium for Mr. Rong. But this notion didn't sit well with Mrs. Rong because it would mean Ms. Sun had a high status. So Mrs. Rong and her allies degraded Ms. Sun by calling her an opium maid who provided ALL services (the ultimate low class/prostitution) as supposed to a mistress who prepared the pipe. There’s a difference.

I find the FL very suitable for the role. I have never watched any of her old series before, except maybe 15 minutes of Rattan before dropping that. She’s good in here, and better than the ML.

Meng did not tell her to seduce the ML. She also did not outright seduce the ML. It just plays out that way because she is slowly getting to see a better side of him, and from that, understands him more, and as time goes on, becomes attracted to him. She weighs her decisions carefully.

I caught the innuendo also. I speculated 2 things. 1) Meng’s sister gave birth to mr. Rong’s son before she died without mr. Rong knowing. 2) mr. Meng were involved with the kidnapping years ago.

Yes, he’s the main lead and plays a major role. There’s also great character development for him.

I didn’t read the novel. So, maybe as the series continues, the brother may show more of his true color if the drama follow the novel closely.

She’s not harming him intentionally. He wants to be her bf, but she’s realistic and knows she can’t commit to the relationship since he’s still under his father’s control. I can’t think of other times when she’s out to purposely caused him pain.

His older dead sister was Mr.Rong’s lover. He believed that she was fooled by Mr. Rong, and that their family good luck charm/ treasure was swindled by Mr. Rong. He’s returned from SF for blood.

Historically, all “maids” are from low class, poor , and uneducated families. They work for wealthy households. There are other “ maids” that are of even lower status like those working in opium dens or dance halls.

I also suspect FL is the daughter of mr. Rong’s murdered best buddy. So far, I don’t detect jealousy from her brother. They seem to have a strong brotherly/ sisterly relationship.

The now pregnant concubine was a former governess of the family. After she became Mr. Rong’s concubine and got pregnant, she got her younger sister to “replace” herself as mr. Rong’s latest love lady /opium maid to further her stronghold on Mr. Rong to benefit her family status.

I really like ShiZhen’s character. Her beef is with Mr. Rong, so she’s careful not to harm other family members.

The opium maid preps the pipe and serves tea at the opium den. But since mr. Rong’s opium maid is “ private and exclusive ,” she also provides other services.

I agree that Jing Tian has a strong presence in the series. I can feel her aura in being Feng Shi Zhen.

I just finished episode 1 and I’m loving it already!!!

I love this period when it’s done well, and the director is delivering nicely. It opens with a violin piece reminiscent to In the Mood For Love which is known for its beautiful cheongsams/qipao. It’s almost as if the director/sound effect team is paying tribute to the movie for its contribution in bringing forth femine essence in the national cheongsam. To top it off, the tango scene is impressively choreographed and shot, showcasing musicality, tension, and mysteriousness. I was sold at this point!

The casting team did a great job with the FL. She has the feisty demeanor as revealed in the alley scene with the neighbor. I love a strong female and she embodies one. I haven’t seen ML’s work before, but so far he’s holding his own.

So glad that I found a new series to indulge in!
