I believe it was explained in one of the episodes that Chuan's aware LR has power/control of the noble houses which means indirectly has power over him/the Emperor..so essentially, she's even more superior than the Emperor. This makes him a puppet ruler, always under the thumbs of the noble houses as was his late father. So when the people he wanted to protect slowly died or taken away, he also lost his kind self.

I like kunning more. Itās not the actors/actresses. They are all great in both! I just feel that the scriptwriter , director, post production /sound teams here is one notch below Kunningās . I still very much enjoy watching this.š
