it was just so incredibly unnecessary to add this to the kdrama, it added nothing to the plot and made no sense at all

I get your point but for me it just made no sense. He could have punished himself in different ways if he really wanted to punish himself. Why would he go to a war zone? He also told her that he would not leave her again a couple of episodes before, so I really dont get why he left her and let her suffer but thats just my opinion.

yes exactly, it made no sense for him to leave her just to punish himself... like you are also punishing her with acting like that... also why would he act like that if he loves her so much? I will just pretend this kdrama had a different ending...
