Excellent then ridiculous
If the drama ended around episode 23 I would have given it a 10This was shaping up to be one of my fav dramas and I honestly I cannot fathom what made the writers, producers and director drop the ball so hard,
I was hopeful that it was a minor slip up and that things would get back on track but it just got worse and worse. After grinding through a few more episodes I eventually skipped to the last 2 episodes just to get closure.

The lead character is a hot mess
At the end of episode 4 I was thinking that this was going to be a solid 10 and then it all went downhill.Considering the premise was that the FL had huge success posing as male and becoming a general, after episode 4, either the writers, the actress, the director or all of the above - completely forgot about this and the FL went from a strong female posing as a male to the typical whining, childish, cutesy female character we see so often in c-dramas.
WHYYYY!!!! So frustrating.
However, Ryan Cheng was incredible. I have not seen him in any other roles but he was so enigmatic and had a quiet intensity that definitely drew me in
Sadly, you cant skip the bad bits when the whole story is centred around one particular character and the FL became unbearable for me.

Female lead was a major dissapointment
The story was promising enough and the acting was ok but the FL repeatedly used baby talk and manipulation which was enough for me to say "no more!" Ironically she was supposed to be smart and strategic so this was either just lazy writing or lazy acting. On a positive note, the maidservant Xiao Tao was hilarious and her interactions with Wei Liang would make for a great spin offWas this review helpful to you?
The writers literally lost the plot
INCREDIBLE fighting scenes, great acting, quality production etc etc. But there is no plot. What you get instead is a series of events that go something like this.
1. ML gets himself into trouble trying to be a hero but he's not very street smart
2. FL saves him
3. There is an epic fight scene
Rinse and repeat
Character arcs follow the same kind of pattern. Characters get introduced, something happens, then the story switches to another character(side note: there was way too much time spent on Miao Ren Fang performing domestic duties - ridiculous)
I kept hoping that the writers were just laying the foundation and that the story was going to kick in at any moment but at episode 18 I realised that this was unlikely.
My advice - don't watch this if you want some kind of cohesive storyline or plot - Just skip to the fight scenes and you will really enjoy it
