Most of these recent Chinese historical/costume dramas are adapted from web novels, they are generally called as "IP drama", IP is short for "intellectual property". The novels often use reincarnation as a plot device which is banned by the Chinese Communist Party(CCP) censorship. In most cases, "amnesia" --or "memory wipe" in this case-- is the replacement for a person being reincarnated in another body. The original owner of the body dies unfairly, and the soul of a modern person takes their place. Replacing reincarnation with amnesia, dramas and films can pass the censorship evaluation.
