If you remember, NHD complained to BYJ that he should stop viewing her as a child or minor. And in light of NHD's unexplained feelings she has for BYJ, she needed assurance of what kind of relationship she has with BYJ and how BYJ really viewed her. Hence, BYJ telling her he loves her, was not to force her to reciprocate but to give her an answer that will show how special he views her. To BYJ, she holds an equal footing with him in the relationship they have for each other. That's my 2 cents though.

I still feel the writing is perfect. I don't think the writer is misleading us when it comes to the relationship between BYJ and NHD. It's just that most viewers have always viewed their love in a romantic way. Which is not.
