Episode 19 and I want to slap her father so bad. I really liked "I never thought, the thing, you protected with your life, was a jade fox", so ran yan got off the hook for now.
Thankyou for reading and leaving such a well thought out response. It's a show without substance, a fluffy time-pass…
getting the difference between "subjective" and "objective"^^
You forgot about product placement :D Yes, true. I really like, how in those historical Dramas the FL often is the heroine and the ML sometimes just a support. This equal footing (among other things) made me fall in love with C-Dramas, since we cannot even really find it in Hollywood. Sadly, they also are often much longer and one has to emerge oneself into this time and era. Since I mostly watch dramas to sweeten up unpopular tasks, I banned historical dramas from parallel watching on most works, so that my mindset stays in the current time. Although I do not really like putting everything in one pot, there are those and those in both modern and historical dramas.
Although not historical: If you ever watch(ed) the movie version, I would like to know your opinion of it.

oh, one more thing. It might be, because you watched it three years ago (and never again, I supposed), so you have put up with all of this. But I think it is rather dangerous, to have dramas like this in the world and having them high rated, too. Just as your first sentences says: "I've completely lost faith in humanity after watching this drama." There are so many women in the world, fighting for respect and appreciation for themselves, but just one drama like this and a teenage girl, who is trying to figure out, who she is in the first place, thinks, it is ok to be bland. Chinese Dramas often have brainwash-value, so one has to make sure they are not the only thing one watches. But whatever one thinks about how this issue should be worked on, this is on a complete other level.

A drama being objectively great is not the point that a drama counts on; a drama has to be subjective great in order to attract viewers and liking is nothing to argue about xD Sounds like analyzing a poem to be a great piece of literature (having all the techniques needed), but somehow the content is not to your liking, you still prefer novels or dramas^^ But I have to say: it might really be the settings of the characters themselves, that makes it that awful to watch. I have rewatched "One smile is very alluring" yesterday and although the key point of "have we ever been not in this kind of relationship" does exist there, too, it was much much less annoying. After (or before) having sit through 30 episodes on this drama, have you tried 1.5h for the movie, too? It might return some joy to you for the drama plot itself. It has much more funny details and much more realistic characters.
Yes, I was wondering about the high rating, too and thinking about writing a review, until I saw yours. The movie adaption "One smile is very alluring" was my first contact with asian videos and english subtitles ever and after watching some dramas and finding this one, I was excited, because I generally like the in-depth of dramas more than the fast plot of movies. But somehow, this girl is just a bland nothing. The thing, that really got me and drags the drama down in my opinion: Every step in relationship they make is him acting as if this has already been like this since long ago and every time she complaints or says something about it, just one comment of his makes her hush and smile in a quite silly way. Really: every single step. One does never see him court her or even just falling in love. It just like this. After seeing her once live and once/twice in the game, he treats himself as being in a relationship with her. It took me a rewatch actively taking a close look on his character (the story follows the girl, after all) to see a bit of his character and "being in love" instead of just "taking care of a pet", as you put it. As you said: she is more of a pet, or, as I thought, a fangirl, glad, that the "master" is paying attention to her. Even in her differentiation of how she sees "Xiao Nai" and "Naihe" I do not really see a difference. Her supposedly being a top student and such is not really seen and not convincing at all. Some comments on your comments though: - when her boyfriend is telling her the moves, she is playing with a very different character (his). In games like that, it is very likely, that he has a complete other repertoire of actions and such in need of very different strategies and moves, so I was more surprised, she could win by just hearing his word-commands coming like shotguns. Also she wins a couple more times than just against the really good-for-nothing-why-is-anyone-interested-in-this-weak-characters-in-a-game girls, it does not undermine her achievements chiefly being told and not seen, though. If at all, how she hacks the forum to find out, who made the post about her having a sugar daddy. Except for some word battles, but I have too high of a standard to really let them count. - Romance dramas with a straight forward relationship really are more prone to be boring. But this is, because a romance drama often relies a lot/solely on (sometimes too fabricated) setbacks, quarrels and such within the couple. With a good enough setting and extradyadic storyline, it could be fine. They do have a storyline, too, it just is not in-depth enough to make due. Also, what you want to say, is, they do not really have character development. They are pretty much the same characters like in the beginning, just that they are now together. That's it. - Also: the characters of the main leads may be a core element of the drama, but do not forget the setting. The idea of the plot line, the production and all was still very good (so I understand, why you did not give them just **, as another comment says). I do still watch it sometimes, if I just want to enjoy the scenery, music and light plot while doing something else. If only both of the main lead characters would have (a lot) more "character", it would have been a great drama.
