A friendship lasting 20 years couldn't have been this awkward, even through some highlights from their past. This made their transition to lovers the farthest thing from being smooth. Although it was 4 episodes, but it really dragged with some segments.
The only valid play here is the nostalgic journey of the female lead and her middling experience of loss. The drama was overloaded with too many trite moments and rundown turns, using molds from far too many clones of its genre. What initially seemed to be promising characters quickly turned into one-dimensional archetypes with limited emotional attachment that gradually weathered away as it got deeper. The dialogues were mostly stiff accompanied by an obnoxious OST. The students from the present were straight up insufferable. Its cinematography was decent, yet it didn't substitute for the hollowness in the text. The cast presented a mixed bag of performances with the teen cast members being mostly awkward and stiff. Although it was short, the drama had some potential if it were to take the more serious route to better fit its themes rather than being excessively bubbly and sentimental.
I wonder what's the story behind its production. It doesn't function as a full or short drama or even a movie.…
After looking into it, it seems all was true: - Filming was set to begin November 2017, however PD Oh Jin Suk walked away from the production on September 19, 2017. - On October 17, SBS announced that PD Jang Tae Yoo would take over the project. - Filming began January 2018. - Nana was originally cast as the female lead, but left the production in 2019 due to the numerous delays. - Lack of payments and production problems continued. Changing production companies. Lighting equipment company filed a lawsuit for 100 million won for missed payment. - Due to the delays in filming, the staff and crew only filmed about 12-episodes worth of content, but it was re-edited down to 6 episodes for its release in 2021 (With Nana as the protagonist). - The drama was renamed from Four Men / Four Sons to Genesis for its 2021 release. - The drama was released in June 2021 as part of the 'KT Summer Drama Collage' line-up. - The production company does have plans for a second season, but also plans to replace all the actors and actresses, as well as the production crew.
Hopefully they never follow it with a second season because no matter how you look at it, it's an unsalvageable big mess.
