The story itself feels fundamentally flawed. While marketed as a rom com, it suddenly pivots to depicting flagrantly abusive characters. The writers introduce a wide spectrum of parenting styles—ranging from supportive and neglectful to toxic, controlling, and outright violent—yet the narrative refuses to deal honestly with the consequences of these actions. Treating such extreme characters lightly, rather than focusing on mildly dysfunctional ones like the female lead's mother, makes these subplots feel like a disappointing distraction.

Additionally, casting mid-30s actors to play high schoolers in uniforms feels absurd, regardless of how intertwined the dual timelines are. Hiring actual teen actors for the flashback sequences would have made those scenes far more believable and natural.
