I think the biggest problem was the missing communication about the baby. She told him to let her go alone and…
I'm assuming they both would have had a serious conversation about terminating the pregnancy but it just wasn't shown. It's a very serious issue and I think they would have come to a calculated decision about getting an abortion; you don't make that kind of decision with limited communication. But I do agree that communication was the biggest problem in their relationship overall which obviously lead to her being emotionally neglected by him. I'm not absolving her of any fault but he seemed to only really talk about himself and his work rather than taking the time to listen to her as well. This led to her feeling neglected and probably deciding that it would be better to mask her emotions/feelings from him, leading to the inevitable demise of their relationship. I interpret her actions coming from a place of neglect from him whereas she didn't really do anything that would have made him unfaithful towards her. She was hesitant but still supportive of his new job and she seemed to understand the inconvenience of him having to constantly drive back to her, if that makes sense? But honestly, this is basically the result of flawed/poor writing. The male lead seems to be characterised without any real depth. And despite my many criticisms of him, I don't hate him which is very ironic I know lol and I think that's because Jang Ki-yong is so charismatic, you can't really hate him which is why I believe the film had very solid lead actors.
You kind of have to rewatch it/reflect on the movie to notice it - it's very easy to miss. But basically when they are at the ob-gyn, they're not there for a check up like we initially think they are, they are actually there for her to terminate the pregnancy. Once you realise this, some of the stuff they say/do aligns with this. Like her telling him to wait in the car and that she'll be alright all by herself because she's a nurse and him immediately hugging her when she comes out, her telling him later in their argument in the car about how he gave up on their child. Hope this clarifies everything
While technically both parties were "unfaithful", people need to understand why the male lead is seemingly more at "fault" in the situation. He emotionally neglected her, choosing to prioritise his career over her. This continued even when she was pregnant and got an abortion. Even though he didn't physically cheat on her while they were together, he did cheat in the sense that he was dishonest to her and "cheating" her of her emotions. While I'm not condoning her unfaithfulness, you can understand and sympathise with her and why she did it whereas for him, at least for me personally, there wasn't anything that I could see that justified his behaviour towards her. Even with the reveal of everything at the end, my view and sympathy for the female lead didn't change. But idk, if anyone has an alternative perspective, I'm interested in hearing it.
While I understand the realism of the ending, I was somewhat frustrated with the ending because I am a sucker for idealistic happy endings and was expecting him to rectify his mistakes. I don't think this movie would provide a satisfying "happy" ending for most because both leads weren't happy in the end, clearly still in love with each other and basically rebounding/settling for the second leads. Nonetheless, I mostly enjoyed this film because of the chemistry between Chae Soo-bin and Jang Ki-yong and hope to see them together in another project.
