(im only on episode 8 as of writing this!! this is just a capsule of my thoughts from episode 1 to episode 7!!! these opinions are subject to change!! pleaseeee dont throw rocks at meeeee :-((( )
honestly i understand why someone might not like the FL, but personally i think the ML is much more unbearable! osuke is such an insufferable character to watch for me, if he wasn't played by my favorite actor i probably would've dropped this immediately. is that a hot take? he's just... really pathetic in a way i don't enjoy (and i normally enjoy tsutsumi's more pathetic characters) and i don't want him to end up with sakurako at all... woww your girlfriend left you seven years ago and you only got over it when a girl who looks exactly like her walked by you? that's like comically pathetic lol. idk i guess i wish the narrative was less sympathetic towards him cause he lied about his ENTIRE identity to sakurako. that is REALLY scummy and the show just doesn't rlly treat it like that. he gets consequences but they still frame it so you feel bad for him. i just don't like him at all... he's not pitiful in a fun or endearing way and SO FAR! (again only on episode 8) he's barely developed from who he was when he lied about his identity unlike sakurako who's been challenged on her beliefs countless times at this point and seems to be on the verge of huge character development. i don't knowww, i just hope osuke gets a little development in these last 4 episodes....
despite all this, i understand why this was tsutsumi's real breakout role, it shows off his skills really well! he does a fantastic job as per usual, his facial expressions (both subtle and major) and movements are really fun to watch. plus i thought he was really cute in that wedding scene :-)
huuuge side note but also, kasuya is really funny to me lol. super weird and a fun kind of pathetic that makes for great comedic relief
definitely my favorite miike film by far... such a fun time. gets funnier every time i rewatch :-) more movies need karaoke segments!! more movies need richard sagawa as a character!!
edit okay maybe not that underrated it is one of his most watched films on letterboxd apparently. still though, more people should talk about it
