A show for a non imaginative viewer. Waste of good acting
Let me contribute to give this 9.2 show the rating it truly deserves. I gave it a 3. 2 stars for two amazing actors and 1 star for good OSTs.This is literally my first review, I wouldnt mind to make one anywhere but I just had to considering it's just such an insult to mislead people to open MDL and see that this show is above 9.
16 episodes of one dimensional writing, unintelligent dialogue and literally zero character arc or development. This is not hating I swear. But I imagine that if you watch this show with your eyes open it might just be the best romcom ever then you suddently open your brain and start to see many missing components of a story. A short sighted story but the writer decided to confuse viewers that it's a long one. From the leads to the supporting characters we never know anything about the characters themselves because they dont share with other characters or the viewers atleast, their humane thoughts.
Kdramas really need to stop with their murder mystery as the conflict or else i'm gonna lose it. This drama did not even bother to give the villain a motivation nor any background. He's just labeled as psycopathic but it's literally just an excuse for lazy writing. Moving on.

Underrated. Actually it should be watched more
This drama is that underwatched here that I had to make a review to give my thoughts about it. If you want a realistic mystery/investigation drama that stays consistent towards the end then its for you. If you come looking for romance then I advice to still give it a try however the focus might be more on realistic and mature relationships.I can see why dramas like these are underwatched since both MLs are actual imperfect yet so well refined characters, like they feel alive. To summarize, the main lead is not the typical dark/grey/red flag that is cold and unfazed towards the female lead, the ones that is pretty much oversaturated in cdramas, it is the opposite. A love triangle of a longing and active main lead who's spoiled, free and willing to act and contrasts the second main lead who's willing but bound by higher power. Genuinely, people would be turn off by the moment they see such main lead but forget that character storytelling is a vital part of stories. One of my favorite moments in this was when Han Muzhi broke down in the streets to basically vent his frustration on feeling powerless. I just love stories that exploits each character's weaknesses and make it their strength, room to grow and makes it a believable story.
This is a great costume drama and don't let fragile characters who's a rarity in cdramas cloud your judgement. Memorable villain as well.
I would love to see more dramas like this in this color grading style with less grainy and sharpening adding a more realistic feel. Recommended

Hidden Gem of 2024
Gave it a 10 to boost the ratings quite more for it deserves it.This is a drama that wasnt even in my radar for dramas this year and only saw it here in mdl as well. Genuinely I could not express how much this type of dramas are heartwarming of the way they portray romance. This drama is definitely equal slight close in terms of maturity and romance themes alongside Love Like the Galaxy, one of the few chinese costume dramas that still holds up till this day.
If you appreciate great and coherent storytelling where the scriptwriter definitely took time to craft the events, this is the show for you. Story and character arcs did not feel rushed because of this. Speaking of characters, despite the show having 6 notable characters, 3 couples, the drama made sure to give audience an idea and set individuality to each so the romance between couples and their conclusion did not feel forced unlike most costume dramas I've seen this and past years. I appreciate this. Surprising favorite character i've had in this show is the Empress, a really interesting empress/character I've seen in a while in cdramas.
Only downside is that it ended actually damn. Amazing drama and might've saved costume dramas in 2024 as of right now.

Best short kdrama this year
Faith in good kdramas restored with this one. Ive recently been leaning towards more cdramas since lately it has been hitting and a lot of kdramas have either been ridiculous or a once a year release that ends up being memorable like this one. Last year was Twinkling Watermelon for me and this year was Mr. Plankton. It's just good to have a tragic story that doesnt really impose itself as one, no forceful emotional scenes, no dragging and is just well written. Characters are not forgotten in the story, and made to connect with each other to correct and conclude their stories. There's also this majestic ahh OST that plays in some scenes and I think this made this drama more heartfelt and real. Story is coherent, not dragged and the destination was as expected but it didnt bore me one bit. Outstanding storytelling.
It took 11 months for kdrama gods to give birth to something good but yes, best kdrama this year btw
