It's not that believable to us, I agree with that. But at that time women stayed at home, learned embroidery, zither, etiquette and manners. He Yan is playful, has knowledge in martial arts and war. Even though they find her face and body different than men, how she acts and her knowledge is not like any other woman they think they know. Also they probably didnt think that a woman would join the army, stay with men day and night since this can ruin their reputation.
