There are so many better period dramas though, you just haven't watched them : six flying dragons, my dearest, empress ki, queen soon deck to name a few...
I can list so many awesome female characters though, you probably didn't watch enough dramas (especially not enough historical dramas ) : First, the best K-drama character ever written in my opinion aka Mishil from Queen Seon Deok played by Go hyun Jung ( Strong, Clever, Inspirational, Ruthless, and simply AMAZING)

except Dots was trash: empty plot, cheesy lines, and just overrall nonsense. Whereas W is amazing. Please dont compare both drama. Dots should be compared to The Heirs aka the other tragic work of that disappointing screenwriter.
I've watched hundreds of dramas for 5 years and this is by FAR the BEST of them all. Queen Seon Deok was originally my fav but Six Flying Dragons beat it. Props to the writers

reply 1997 and 1994 dont even have that much flashback . I think you're confused because of the word "reply" but it's not what you think at all ! the stroy is just set in 1997 (or 1994) but that's all !
so I recommend you watch reply 1997 first . It's very fun to see how korea was at that time , kdramas , and kpop etc ... and the drama is truly hilarious
the acting is terrible , both leads are annoying as hell ( why the f isnt JJH the main lead whyyy ??) and the plot is tacky . I've watched 6 episodes just to be sure but I give up

it seems that you didnt quite get the drama cuz the drama isnt about her life as an Empress but about her long journey on the path to become empress so .....
