The only reason they're not being explicit is because the last time they were, the show was forcefully cancelled, the director and actors were almost jailed and they were banned from seeing each other ever again. So, just like Hollywood in the 30s to 50s when queer stories were also banned, Chinese creators use codes to signal to viewers that what they're watching is not just bromance. These stories can always be remade in the future when they lift the ban but for now they should be supported because what they're doing is really brave. They're not necessarily "removing" the queer aspect, they're just making it subtle to avoid being cancelled or worse. Queer stories don't have to be explicit to be great stories. The massive popularity of bromance and BL dramas will increase the pressure to the government to lift the ban just like what happened in Hollywood in the 60s. That's why they're doing what they're doing.

This is so dumb. The creators obviously want to make it more explicit but can't because they'll be put in serious harm if they do. Purity spiraling at a time when BL shows are banned in China is really ignorant and really pathetic. Just because they aren't explicit doesn't mean it's not gay. The creators leave enough queer codes for everyone but the censors to get. Saying that Chinese queer writers should just stop making bromances completely because of censorship is cruel for the chinese citizens who want to be represented in any way they can . Also Chinese bromances are just better written because they can't just use cliches all the time.

That's exactly what's happening. a lot of folks here seem to really hate bl and and are review bombing the show! So sad!
