From Song Yi Meng’s perspective, the picture is very different. In the original story, Nan Heng destroys everything…
Okay, I’ve had the past few hours to stew on it a bit more and calm down, and I agree with what you’re saying. For one, I understand Yimeng’s reaction to a point. Like I said, I know we as the audience have the privilege of knowing things she doesn’t and seeing sides of Nan Heng that she doesn’t get to see. She doesn’t know his true feelings, his true intentions, or even who he really is as a person. And Nan Heng is constantly shooting himself in the foot by playing in to people’s assumptions instead of being fully authentic with her. Not to mention, the whole hidden identity thing (which never ends well, for anyone). So, in this particular situation, I think most of my frustration really lies with Yiting. I think it was selfish of her to sacrifice Nan Heng’s autonomy and consent because she didn’t want to marry the Eighteenth Prince. She made a bad situation worse, and when she and Nan Heng spoke afterwards, she didn’t show a hint of remorse. She didn’t own up to what she did, she didn’t apologize, and it was her actions that set the whole disaster in motion. I really can’t understate how much this trope gets on my nerve, and it always gets pushed to the side and downplayed (especially in period dramas, and especially when it happens to the ML) and I know there won’t be any consequences for Yiting.
All in all, it’s frustrating to be watching this from an outsider perspective, seeing Yimeng be so close to some puzzle pieces and still missing the full picture, seeing Nan Heng be blamed for the one situation where he was one hundred percent a victim (and still not be able to salvage it afterwards), and especially seeing the person who started this shit show not own up to her actions.
Nan Heng isn’t doing himself any favors, he isn’t doing himself and Yimeng’s relationship any favors, and Yiting is an attempted rapist who won’t face any consequences for her actions (and even if she was only trying to make it seem like something happened, it still isn’t okay).
Listen, I’m willing to give the FL grace on most things, but I’m on ep 23, and I need to vent a little. I…
What’s really pissing me off is that she’s calling off the engagement and going on a tirade because she thinks he did something with Yiting, when Yiting literally drugged and tried to assault him??? But she’s going on a rampage like she’s defending her sister’s honor and protecting her sister when her sister is literally the perpetrator??? And she won’t hear him out, and Yiting isn’t owning up to what she did. If this was any other situation, I think I would be trying to see her side, but this is pissing me off. I don’t hate the Fl, and I realize there are other factors at play; we know things about Nan Heng that she doesn’t. We see sides of him that she doesn’t. But I must say, I can’t take her side in this particular instance. Also, another reason this is getting on my nerves is the fact that this is episode 23. I know it’s 40 episodes, and I signed up for a slowburn, but the fact that there’s been basically zero progress in her opinion of him? I can’t believe a period cdrama is making me sympathize so much with the ML, cause they usually get on my nerves, but this ep was just too much.
Listen, I’m willing to give the FL grace on most things, but I’m on ep 23, and I need to vent a little. I understand why she doesn’t trust the ML, but it’s beginning to grate on my nerves. She’s clinging to the script this and the script that, but the fact of the matter is, not one character has turned out to be exactly the same as what she read in the script. Chu Guihong isn’t a perfect chivalrous gentleman, and Yiting isn’t scheming to get with Nan Heng. Even though the iconic scenes haven’t changed, there’s been variations in everything else and every single character. So my thing is, why can’t she even begin to think that Nan Heng might not be what he seems? She knows all the Cdrama tropes, she can predict all these things, but she hasn’t seen a drama where the male lead pretends to be someone he’s not?? Where the male lead’s infamous reputation ends up being a result of people’s assumptions?? I get that he’s threatened her and she doesn’t want to be killed in the upcoming iconic scene, and I really can’t blame her, but this episode in particular is grinding on my nerves.
It is finished! The battle is over! I can’t believe I watched the entire thing. On a serious note, everything after episode 30 was a fever dream and I do believe the writers just gave up. At least we got a happy ending.
I'm on episode 37, and I am so done. Between YD and TK's moms, and JH, I'm ready to just put this drama on a shelf and forget it.
The mental gymnastics of some of these characters to be able to make themselves the victim is just olympic level. The writers must be smoking that good good because the past 3-4 episodes have given me a headache..... just a bunch of unnecessary bull.
The only thing keeping me going is the fact that I made it this far.
