The movie only gets interesting around the halfway point and that's when the comedy and horror elements actually come into play. It's a shame it didn't look like they used practical effects for the horror makeup.
The best thing about this was Jes (Us). He put his all into it and you can tell. I don't know if the other main actors were either given poor direction or their characters were just less fleshed out but they weren't really selling it to me (though I feel like I understand some of the choices when it comes to Apo's character Pran).
The movie would have benefitted from the first half being cut way down or dramatically changed from a 'let's insult/ogle Maelee' fest to focussing on something more tangible between Pran and Maelee that would make what came next more impactful.
(I wrote this being as careful as I can about spoilers, but let me know if I let anything slip through.)
It was fun and was very promising. The violence was visceral and there were points where the tension was close to hitting the mark.
However, the series left so many loose ends and seemed to forget several of its own threats. For example, the woman with the kitchen knife and yellow dress. She was breaking in and yet nothing was done about her and we never see her again after.
It was clear they rushed a lot at the ending. The bus incident felt like the writer just wanted to get it done. And we didn't get nearly enough backstory between Kwak Yong Ju, Han Do Gyeong and his mother. Not to mention that I needed to see the mother and son's 'One Year Later'. Come on.
This is a nitpick but I also wish they explored the concept of those with strong hearts being able to resist the Evil Buddha. There were a few characters who definitely should not have been as affected as they were.
Overall, an entertaining watch with sequel bait and too many non-sequelbait loose ends.
