I actually started with J-dramas in early high school, and I still love them!! <3 Japanese storylines (in anime and dramas and movies alike) are some of my favorites in existence. :') There's just something about the creators' imaginations, and even if it's not a story based around fantasy or sci-fi, the way that it's put together (with the directorial artistry, music, etc.) is really special and completely gets my imagination reeling. *^* <3 :3
I also really love that Japanese dramas aren't generally as slick as Korean dramas (or American dramas). They have a great feel, in my opinion. And it really does depend on the drama you watch, because some utilize different filming styles, etc. For instance, the newer drama, Never Let Me Go, felt a little more like a movie-quality production to me (still haven't finished that, though...it's a little heavy), and the Seirei no Moribito drama was way up there in production value. @_@ One of my favorites is the mini-drama Fallen Angel. It has a different feel from any other Japanese drama that I've seen (more like a gritty indie thing), and the story was so interesting and well told~ ^^ <3 Those kinds of stories are some of my favorites. :]
I just generally love a lot of stories that come from Japan, and they satisfy me in a way that other countries' don't. I don't really feel fulfilled after watching American scripted dramas. Korean ones are great, don't get me wrong, but Japan is my first love, and will probably always take top billing in my heart. <3 ^^
I'm glad that you wrote this article, because it's sad that a lot of people are missing out on some seriously awesome shows from Japan!! And there's so much more than romantic comedies! Lots of great action shows (that are cool and serious), medical dramas, etc.~

Some of my very favorite Japanese dramas~~<3
Tatta Hitotsu no Koi, Kaitou Tantei Yamaneko (HILARIOUS <3), Innocent Love, Liar Game, Hidarime Tantei EYE (the special and the drama~), Fallen Angel, Gakkou no Kaidan, Siren, Subete ga F ni Naru, Sugarless, Orthros no Inu, and Samurai High School~
(I didn't want Subete ga F ni Naru to end! x3 The anime was awesome, too. The particular case that's tackled in the anime is too condensed in the drama, so I recommend watching the anime first, if you're interested. ^^v)

Some of my favorite Japanese movies~~<3 *^*
Moon Child, Kagen no Tsuki, L: Change the World, Rurouni Kenshin (all three! X~X), Library Wars (<333), Kanojo wa Uso Wo Aishisugiteru, Tajomaru, Signal, Shindo, Waiting in the Dark, and Halfway~ Princess Jellyfish is great, too (I saw the anime first), and so is Platina Data~ So many more good ones~ :') lol
