Rae Honey

I don't usually write reviews. I watch, I enjoy, and I move on. But Where the Mask Ends made me stop and write one, because it was just that good. I have never been this hooked on a drama while it was airing. I was literally waiting for the next episode every single day, and now that it has ended, I'm sad that it finished so fast 😭.

Schemes, revenge and a romance worth waiting for

Everything about this drama worked for me: the cast, the cinematography, the songs, all of it. But what I loved most were the schemes and the revenge. Every episode kept me guessing, and nothing felt boring or dragged out. And then the romance in the last episodes came and made the wait worth it 🔥. Honestly, I wish we had seen even more of the romance, but the story is not really a romantic one at its core, so I'm completely fine with that.

Yan An as Lu Zhuo: my first drama of his and I'm already a fan

This is the first time I have watched Yan An ❤️ in a drama, and I'm now a fan 😻. His acting, his emotions, everything was perfect. Lu Zhuo is the kind of male lead who is always beside her, never lets her down, and never cares where she comes from or what she did. He even goes against the rules behind the curtains for her. He is the standard 🔥💕. Yan An made every one of those feelings look real, and I felt them with him.

Tian Xiwei as Wei Rao: another amazing performance

I'm a fan of Tian Xiwei from Pursuit of Jade, and she did not let me down here either. She plays a woman who has to stay brave while hiding so much fear, and she does it beautifully. Her face can say so much without a single word. Together, Tian Xiwei and Yan An were extraordinary 😭💕. Their acting is the heart of this drama.

And Wei Rao's confession in the fire? Epic 🔥. Lu Zhuo deserved that moment, because why not? After everything he did for her, he earned it.

The supporting cast was so good

The supporting characters made this world feel alive:

Bi Tao and Ah Man were both lovely to watch.
The Lu family was great, especially the grandmother, the mother and the fourth aunt. Each of them had her own strong presence.
Lady Shouan, Wei Rao's maternal grandmother, was my favorite surprise. After Wei Rao and Lu Zhuo, she is the most intelligent person in the story.
Lady Li is so cute and beautiful.
And I'm really glad the emperor was reasonable and understanding. It is so refreshing when a ruler listens instead of making everything harder.
The only flaw: the ending

Now for my honest opinion. The ending was the one thing I did not love. For me, the drama should have ended at the scene where Lu Zhuo teaches Wei Rao with the sword. It was the perfect final moment. Liu Shou's death felt unnecessary, and they finished him in just two seconds. Really? 😭 And the baby? Who knows if it will be a boy or a girl?

The ending felt open, and they can make up for it with a season 2. I would absolutely love to have one.

Final thoughts

I will not judge the whole show by its last 15 minutes, because everything before it was perfect. Where the Mask Ends gave me great acting, beautiful scenes, smart schemes, good songs and a romance I'm still thinking about. It's easily a 10/10 for me. Highly, highly recommended 🔥💕
