She never knew all the things XL did for her. But before XL died he left a letter revealing what he really feels and why he did the things he did for her. He put it inside of something like a toy/figurine which he gave to the bird spirit (her mother's friend) which the bird gave to her as a wedding present. She had no idea that it was from XL. So unless that thing breaks and the letter inside is revealed, she will never know about XL's feelings (which I am praying to all gods that will break so that she will know the truth, I bet she will feel more devastated by then). When she learned of his death (she was eating in a restaurant with Jing and their servants when she heard the news from the other table) she was so devastated, crying so loud, and really having a meltdown, she eventually passed out from the shock, disbelief, and too much crying. I remember she drank the whole night, which Jing let her and was just guarding her during this time that she was crying her heart out while drinking. I believe each of the novel reader has a different opinion of whom she really loved more. I myself believe that it was XL, but again it depends on your interpretation of the book because she was really guarded of her feelings and you will just take a glimpse from here and there. She was perfectly aware that it was XL who took her away and she was very angry with him. I remember their first kiss underwater was to help her to breath so she was aware of it.

I had a mistake in my first comment. I meant that she fell in love with XL, and him to her. Atleast that is what I understood from the novel. It's the kind of love we are looking for in drama. You will feel it/XY showed what she truly feels in a few scenes. The longing to be with XL. I especially felt so sad when XY was assassinated and XL did his best to save her but when XY finally woke up he didn't even see her but just sent her on her way. I always thought that he knows his love is getting deeper by that time and he still don't want to admit that to her. XL knew before XY who her real father was and he also knows what happened between XY's parents (who are from different kingdom like them) and how that ended, I think he felt they are in the same circumstance. Also, XL is the general of the shengnong's rebel army. He knew from the start theirs is a losing war but he couldn't possibly leave his father and their army behind to be with XY. And I think this is the reason why he never let XY know of his true feelings. Others may have a different opinion on it though. I truly wish the drama will show the epilogue that was in XL's POV. It will let the viewers know how much he loved her and how much he did for her.

I really thought i'm the only one who feels this way. I only see people praising him all the time. I haven't even watched any dramas where he is the ML. I can't even get pass the first episode of Who Rules the World 😅

Still my favorite asian drama of all time. Really happy I stumbled into this treasure may years ago. Looking forward for LSS's new drama ❤️

What I understand from the novel is that she was in love with XL but as mentioned only Jing can give the life that she wants so in her mind she has already settled for Jing. Though I think she tried to confess to XL at one point but he disregarded it. XL also loved her but because of his reasons, chose to hide instead. XL did everything he could so the FL can have the life that she always wanted even if he was not part of it. FL was better off with Jing but XL got my vote in this one. They are the star-crossed lovers in the story.
