A great movie
It's a stunning movie in any way you look at it.It's not traditional Wuxia as fight scenes are quite realistic and choreographed by people who know what they are doing. Story, acting, scenery/CGI have high cinematic value .
It seems this is a first in a series but luckily there is no cliffhanger.
My only complaint and the reason for not giving it a higher score is killing off some characters who could have been crucial part of future movies (if there is any).
Definitely worth two hour of your time if you are in to ancient China content.

One of the best in 2020
I watched this drama in 3 days and I am impressed how well, pretty much everything was done even though the drama is kinda short with only 24 episodes.The story is simple but surprisingly well done! While there were minor holes in the story but with the satire around it, you will not even notice it.
The end was great but it does bring some questions like: Where are the rest of the "team"? There must be somewhere in the world -This aspect of the story could have been explored further but it would bring complexity to the storyline.
Main actresses and actors were great with good chemistry and just as good supporting roles. Mrs. Zhao is perfect for this role and despite her age, she plays the character very well with all the range of emotions. I have always enjoyed shows she's been in.
With the fast passed story, you will not even notice the music but I liked the OST nevertheless.
Overall, this drama is definitely worth your time!

less than worthless
I read the novel, which was great, but this drama was butchered to the point of unrecognizability. I know it is very difficult to move such a complex story to the small screen, but this feels like a high school project. Cheap sets, subpar acting of most actors, but considering the lines, it would be next to impossible to portray the character in question properly. After the first 10 episodes, I kept going just to see how bad it's gonna get. I was secretly hoping it would get better, and it did, but very slightly and with the focus on the leader of the beggars' clan. Special effects are less than disipointing, and fight choreography seems to be planned by ballet dancers. Wate of time. You're better of watching a movie, I believe from 2017, but the story is focused on the leader of the beggar clan only - it's still a lot better than this abomination.Was this review helpful to you?
Very Different
Very different drama but in a good way. It reminds me a lot of graphic novel and most of the story base was told that way but it stopped 2/3 through the season.Interesting love triangle was very nicely done but very sad and full of sorrow. Very dark including sad ending but they have to justify the title.
This is one of the rare dramas that could have at least 20 more episodes as story and some developments and facts were just...Well.. put in place. Ending was kind of rushed too.
Nevertheless, acting, camera, sets, constumes, CGI and choreography is nicely done. Even camera work shows high detail and attention to detail.
NOTE: This is my first drama with Li Yi Tong and she is a great actress but it was at the times very painful to watch. She is so skinny that throughout the season it would distract me - It would be really hard to do anything considering her bone and skin hands, never mind wielding the sword. I will definitely have to look up some drama of hers as I like her acting and unusual fiery character and voice.

Not much here
I tried to watch this drama several times, but sadly, I can't get over the lackluster acting and poor costumes (if you can call them that). Sets aren't much better.I like the story idea, but this drama was poorly executed, regardless of how you look at it.
In my opinion, acting across the board is so forced that it drives me crazy. Granted, I'm a bit biased as all dramas are compared to Joy of Life S1, which is a perfection IMO.
