I don't understand why people don't discuss Jing's character. The only relatable thing about him was the story of him being caged. He's literally just a slave who does whatever Xiaoyao asks; he has no personality. Xiangliu was never a good match for her, but he did so much for her and she doesn't even realise it. Maybe they tried to avoid a predictable ending, which is why they let Xiangliu die in battle. The only way I can interpret this romance is that Jing represents her healed, loving self, while Xiangliu represents her traumatised self. Xuan never properly admitted his feelings and lost that competition.
There are so many disappointing things about this drama. Initially, I thought it was wuxia/xianxia, but there are barely any cool fights. I guess all the budget went to generating backgrounds. Furthermore, Xiaoyao used to have impressive cultivation, but she never recovered.
Ultimately, it's just a historical romance and court drama with elements of wuxia. Tbf it's exactly what I don't like, so I'm biased
