Yup this is why shows purposely downgrade on second leads

That's why if you do it this kind of story it's better to write the new lead as the second lead if that makes sense. Make it almost impossible to tell he's the new lead while building the character development up to them getting together at the end. For example, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo. They make it to obvious with the shower scene and then proceed to show him and Typhoon, definitely not a good idea.
