I read the novel and she's a transmigrator. They threw that in at the very very end of the novel and it was such…
Yeah, the novel had side chapters and it includes an alternative ending. The uncle is reborn in the past and manages to stop the tragedy from occurring--he marries his beloved and has a son with her. ML and FL grows up together but ML only saw her as a little sister that he doted on until they grow up. He starts to fall for her after he comes back from war but he refuses so acknowledge his feelings at first. But then she goes to war to save her grandpa and manages to win the battle but falls off a cliff. She's found and saved by the Zhao old couple and he eventually finds her in the same house they first met at. She wakes up and tells him she dreamt of another reality (aka this one, the one we watched). After her near death experience, he drags her home to get married. I would say the drama is very very similar to the actual novel. The drama didn't stray too far--there were a few scenes that they tweaked to make it flow better. i.e. when Song Yan finds out that Fang Changyu is the general and Yan Zheng is a Marquis. The only difference is in the novel, Song Yan showed up at the FL's mansion because they needed a tutor for FL's little sister but in the drama Song Yan showed up to teach FL court etiquette but otherwise the scenes are pretty similar. Oh and i don't think the gang goes off to war with her even though they existed in the novel--I think the drama expanded their roles for comedic relief and for the feels. I'm glad they added them.
Is YQQ a transmigrator? I've read it in some comments/recaps
I read the novel and she's a transmigrator. They threw that in at the very very end of the novel and it was such a small snippet. In the novel, the prince's maid drugged the prince and forced a maid (YQQ) on him so the prince would have a child to continue the bloodline. He hated her and everything about that incident. YQQ only transmigrated over after the original soul slipped and fell then the YQQ we all know came to this world. While she was trying to escape, she happened to save the prince and that's when he became obsessed with her. I honestly don't even know why they added that in there since it didn't add anything to the novel so I was really surprised they included this in the drama. Maybe it was an explanation of why the prince became so obsessed with her because she really isn't like any other woman.
I'm so annoyed; why did they have to cut the scene from ep 38--you know the one where she crawls out from the covers. It was nothing too scandalous but it had me kicking my feet together. Ughhhh
This started off sooooo good with so much potential. I was obsessed the first few episodes and then it all went downhill. Both leads can act but the script got really bad. The ML was a prime minister in his previously life and the FL lived an extra 20 years as well but it feels like they wasted all this knowledge. The ML revolved around the FL--he never did much except to prop up the FL; his backstory of a power prime minister was wasted. I wanted 2 strong characters standing side by side with one another but instead I got 2 hot messes. She was helpless despite being a princess and ML didn't do anything interesting.
I will have to say I enjoyed the ML acting here. Story of Kunning Palace was not his best work especially since I watched Maiden Holmes first and had high hopes for him. I hope he continues to improve his acting (I am watching Chasing Jade right now and I'm happy to say his acting has improved some more.)
I read the book and I will have to say that the emperor is much more entertaining and light hearted in the drama. He's so dang funny--every scene with him is a hoot. The emperor in the books was much more twisted. In the drama, I felt bad for him until the very end even though he stabbed his own people in the back. He's just trying to survive; it was clear from the very beginning he never should've been an emperor since he doesn't have any backbone what so ever and no ability to seize power even if it was placed in front of him. Song Yan and the emperor is cut from the same cloth. If he was a peasant, at most, he would've just been annoying.
It's me... Spoilers please.1. What episode do they get together.2. Any breakups (which episode and for how long).3…
1. Ep 17. They're kinda flirting throughout but ep 17 is the first kiss and that's when they officially get together 2. Not really any breakups to tbh. He does get amnesia at the very end of ep 31 and he loses all of his memories of her and he thinks she's his enemy once more. He remembers at the very beginning of ep 32 so it's short "breakup". 3. Not really a long triangle. The SML is obsessed with the FL and thinks she belongs to him but it's his one sided delusion. 4. Yes, HE 5. I would say it's romance mixed in with politics but I loved the romance here nonetheless and the chemistry is chef's kiss. If you want a truly strong FL standing toe to toe with ML, this drama is it. 6. Yes--I will say the first two kisses are slightly awkward for me but it gets better as the story progresses. Although I feel like some people will say I'm being nitpicky here.
I've seen some people bothered by the initial violence towards each other in the beginning of the show--he has her tortured, some waterboarding and whipping (I mean she is an enemy commander who nearly killed him and killed countless of his soldiers so understandable. I saw this as him treating her as an equal and disregarding her gender. Don't worry, she gets him back. She kidnaps him and whips him back too--I saw this as an important scene to show how vengeful and strong-head the FL is. Someone else on here pointed out that FL did that so they'd be on the same level. He tortures her, kidnaps her and then basically holds her hostage in his house. If she didn't give him an eye for an eye, she wouldn't have any leverage in their relationship and the equality between them wouldn't be as strong. I loved how they always had each others back. If she's in danger, he'll show up. If he's in danger, she'll show up. I'm so tired of all the ML always rescuing the FL--I'm happy it's a 2 way street in this drama.
Also the acting is wonderful here, even from the side characters. I love how all the actors/actresses aren't afraid to ugly cry. They're still visually stunning despite the ugly crying since they're all beautiful people. I am tired of actors/actresses trying to always look their best at the expense of their craft.
I absolutely loved this drama. My personal favorite drama of the year. This was definitely a surprise for me--this drama was what I expected LOTFG and Shadow Love to be. Ngl both dramas were a bit of a let down for me even though I still enjoyed them.
So I’m about to wrap up the show and have been glancing through the discussion. I wanted to share some thoughts…
That's a pretty good way to look at it. Honestly, when the ML had her waterboarded and whipped, I saw that as him treating her as an equal. I mean if I captured an enemy commander, regardless of their gender, I would've done the same if I was in the same time period. When she captured him and whipped him back, I saw that more as a scene to tell the audience who she was as a person--an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. She's not the type to stand down even if she was at a disadvantageous position. It showed her tenacious personality and showed us exactly how she became a FEMALE commander when it was so rare at the time. No shade to anyone--but this was the fire and backbone I expected the other 2 female general dramas of 2025 to have.
HMMMMM…… Yah I’m kinda coming up blank. I am immediately thinking of Moonlight Mystique, but I wouldn’t…
I actually loved Shen Li just as much as this drama. Also really liked Are you the one--similar vibes but a more comedic undertone. A Journey to Love was amazing too. This was actually the first time I've commented in a really long time and didn't expect so many replies. Thanks everyone
Ugh I finished this but I'm not over it. This is one of the very few dramas I wish I could forget completely so I can rewatch. It was sooo much fun to watch. If anyone else knows a drama with a feral strong FL like FYX and an unhinged idgaf ML like FSG, please drop the rec. Loved every second. Perfect casting.
Omg I'm on episode 11 right now and the drama is pissing me off. I really can't with the shitty CGI. The actors are literally being copied and pasted into the background and it's really obvious, which is disrupting my viewing experience. I have a pretty high tolerance for dramas if they have good actors and plots, but with the bad CGI and dumb characters, I'm ready to bail. The damsel-in-distress act that the the hero and the heroine keeps playing is not interesting. I was interested in this drama because I thought the heroine was going to be bad-ass but so far the hero and heroine keeps trying to sacrificing their own lives for each other. I thought they were going to come up with brilliant plans the would blow my mind but no, both Bai Ping Ting and the General goes to the king and offers up their lives in exchange for one another (it's unoriginal and boring). I would have been fine with it if it happened once or twice but they've already done it 3 times and I'm only on episode 11. Oh, and I also missed the part where Ping Ting falls in love with the General--one minute she hates him and in the next she's in love with him and giving up everything for him. I don't feel the chemistry between the two characters at all; it feels too forced. The first episode was pretty good and I loved the fight scenes because they were beautifully choreographed but the quality of the drama slowly went down hill from there. I'm going to continue watching this, hoping and praying that it gets better.
