I think Mo Ruo Fei is a lady but circumstances forced her to be disguised as a guy. From what I have watched in other dramas/read in some web novels, male children are the ones who tend to lead the family when the father passes away. I think she was disguised as a boy from a young age as she had no brothers and when her dad passed away she had to become the heir to fend off greedy relatives and retain their fortune. Otherwise, their fortune would have been inherited by a male relative from her father's side and she and her mother would have been left destitute.
