I'm a Hawaii-born fan of both anime and Asian dramas. My love for anime started way back in the '80s with classics like Robotech and Voltron. I was especially lucky because I believe not many places in the US had access to Japanese programs like we did. While my family was watching Japanese dramas on a local Hawaii channel, KIKU-TV, in the early '90s with favorites like Abarenbo Shogun, I didn't personally become hooked on dramas until my college years in 1997.
Back then, being a fan was a real act of dedication! There were no streaming services, so to watch my favorite dramas, I had to be home to watch them live or set the time-record on the VHS player, making sure I had enough space left on the tape. I was lucky enough to have a friend who was a translator for a channel like Nippon Golden Network, and she would lend me her subtitled tapes—including my all-time favorites, Koori no Sekai and Kamisama Mou Sukoshi dake.
I'm so grateful for today's modern technology, which has made it possible to watch dramas anytime, anywhere. I'll admit my kisskh is more modest compared to my MyAnimeList, but it's built on a foundation of true passion.
