I can't even with this show. The writing was just.. where was it? The amount of things that they set up and then never paid off was ridiculous. I suppose I'm supposed to just ignore it all because oh the cute cuddles and kisses and staring at each other in the eyes or some such nonsense. But I actually like the plot in stories that I'm spending so much time watching.
For example all the angst over the mother... And we never see her. I watched on Viki and there were so many comments where people thought the mom was going to pop up - maybe she's this lady trying to get a divorce? maybe she's this lady? maybe she's that lady? no. they just introduce how one of the characters hates his mother because she left him at a young age and they talk about it consistently throughout several episodes... she dies without us ever seeing her the end.
How about the romance itself? One of the characters is in love with the other since he was a kid so there's your angst. He seems to have accidentally, or rather he didn't plan to, confess his feelings. The other character goes oh no we're brothers! Brothers Brothers Brothers. Brothers. plenty of room for angst here, and plot lines, and character development, as he starts to realize that maybe he likes his friend as more than that.. But no. we have a conversation where it's like well dude, your friend confessed so if you want them in your life you'd better reevaluate your feelings. You either be with him or don't ever see him again ever. And he goes Oh I guess you're right yo friend time to land a big old smooch on you because we're together now I'm in love. What?
okay I'll get over that part whatever. there's still having to tell the families right? And only the sister is supportive! sure enough, Dad finds out, goes on a mild rant. significant other goes to visit the Dad, we don't get to see that scene at all it immediately cuts away. only for the couple to then break up. The viewer knows, if you've watched enough dramas, that it's because of whatever the dad said that we didn't get to see. But it was ridiculous because there was no lead up to it, we didn't get to see the conversation, and then it was solved -poof- as soon as the dad was okay with it they got back together. no discussion of the breakup, or their feelings, or anything they just stare at each other. But because they're gazing longing away into each other's eyes I'm supposed to just forget that this whole thing was thrown into the show and then thrown out with basically no good explanation.
or how about the bartender, who suddenly is in love with one of the characters? I mean we knew that she was in a one-sided love but.. with one of the characters? I legit thought it was the other girl bartender.. or somebody who is going to come into the show later? she shoots her shot and then - Even though we know she's in super angst from this one-sided love - goes oh well let me go throw a glass of water in the face of the other guy for... being upset that she tried to get his ex the minute they broke up? And then I'll be totally fine and we're all friends like nothing happened and I have no feelings. What?
My favorite setup of the entire movie was how they made it pretty clear that one of the characters did not believe in real love marriage commitment etc. trauma from his childhood his mom ditching him? trauma from seeing all the many many divorced couples that they do at their job? I don't know- it was something that could have been addressed though... But it wasn't. not only does this man not approve of commitment but then he jumps into a relationship with someone without really deciding he's in love or LGBT, but then gets his heart broken for no real reason, yet takes him back no questions asked, and then proposes marriage virtually immediately. with no problems. problems with his previous state of disapproval over marriage never addressed.
I'm surprised this story has a rating as high as it does.
