I think some extra tags need to be added to this drama. (murder, perhaps?? Overzealous mothers??) I hate Mr. Ji…
Its a kdrama, if he is adorable, chances are he is either stupid or completely crazy, and I always have my bet on crazy. On overzealous mothers: Me wanting to make my child's future better by enrolling them in pricey academies is tue boundary of overzealousness. What these motyers do is ride on the money and power they have and try their best to fear and dramamonger and control the academy where their children study, not to mention try to ruin the life of the teacher who doesn't lead a life as they want. This is exploitation by parents, of teachers and their own children. I think what they did with Hae Yi's aunt and the math teacher would count as damaging their reputation and harassing them, which would count as criminal behaviour in many countries. But its a kdrama and they are rich, so it will be passed as light banter between worried parents and teachers.
So, Crash Course has 3 different plots, with one subplot for Mr Ji: the main leads' romance, the murder mystery and the education of Hae YI at the tuition academy. Two plots have been resolved and we are in the mystery part of the show. The first 8 episodes are the reason I watched the show, and am writing this review for. Jung Kyun Ho is a very good actor, he pulls off the comedic as well as the serious scenes beautifully. Especially the comedy, which I enjoyed the most, laughing out loud. I liked Kyung Ho and Do Yeon's banter throughout, much fun. I liked how the story portrayed the toxic education cult and parent behaviour, which very often makes the children depressed and feel inefficient. So, when Kyun Ho's character was embroiled in the scandal, I thought okay, now he will take a clean break from this whole power games of the rich parents and stay adamant on his decision to leave Pride. But no, our boy feels nostalgic(?) about the place that literally played a big role in dragging his personal life through the streets and abandoned him at the drop of a hat. But okay, I understand that kdramas need to stay inside the conventions of Korean society, and not give in to sudden flights of critical thinking.
Another issue I have is if they wanted the murder mystery to take over the later half of the drama, they should have build up to it, which they did quite weakly. I wish they'd shown more of Sun Jae's brother's struggles as a student, elaborate more on his character which would have helped provide a reason for his behaviour now. I would not say much about how they pile up the loose ends in the last few episodes instead of simultaneously exploring them throughout the series, that would also have taken out the extra bits in each episode, but that is a very common trope in dramas, so its okay. Also, what is Ji's deal? Its like I'm watching two different dramas lol. I won't be surprised if Ji turns out to be a control freak psycho who has some childhood trauma with the education system. I also think he is going to try and make the couple breakup lol. Lets see.
