XD yeah my dad says that to me as well

that we Chinese either are busy fighting each other (also or being colonized by others)

while the west/western countries are busy colonizing others, though Im pretty sure some other nonwestern or maybe western countries does that too with the constant internal fighting

and also the "how these people have to manipulate between their relationships with one another, living in fear and suspicion of each other" that was only during that time period- Japanese colonial period and Republican Era in the 40s (esp. w/ KMT/GMD vs CPC/CCP fighting each other and also fighting Japanese/ww2 at the same time (depending on the years)) and during the cultural rev. in the 60s

btw according to the years (1940s) listed in this drama was during the Japanese colonial period (nearing ww2 years), GMD/KMT and CPC/CCP (were fighting against each other already/prev) and then they were fighting against the Japanese
